The Genuine Particle
''The Genuine Particle'' was a one-off comedy special, broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on 10 September 2008, to commemorate the switching of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. It was written by Steve Punt and produced by David Tyler, and starred Reece Shearsmith, Geoffrey Whitehead, Nicola Walker, Adrian Scarborough, Ingrid Oliver, and Ben Willbond. The show was set hundreds of meters underground on the day of the opening of the Large Hadron Collider, and centred around time travel, wormholes, and a lost security pass. BBC Radio 4 is a British national radio station owned and operated by the BBC that replaced the BBC Home Service in 1967. Large Hadron Collider
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest and highest-energy particle collider. It was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) between 1998 and 2008 in collaboration with over 10,000 scientists and hundreds of universities and laboratories, as well as more than 100 countries. It lies in a tunnel in circumference and as deep as beneath the France–Switzerland border near Geneva. The first collisions were achieved in 2010 at an energy of 3.5 teraelectronvolts (TeV) per beam, about four times the previous world record. After upgrades it reached 6.5 TeV per beam (13 TeV total collision energy). At the end of 2018, it was shut down for three years for further upgrades. Reeson Wayne "Reece" Shearsmith (born 27 August 1969) is an English actor, writer and comedian. He is best known for being a member of ''The League of Gentlemen'', alongside Steve Pemberton, Mark Gatiss, and Jeremy Dyson. Geoffrey Whitehead
Geoffrey Whitehead (born 1 October 1939) is an English actor. He has appeared in a range of television, film and radio roles. In the theatre, he has played at Shakespeare's Globe, St Martin's Theatre and the Bristol Old Vic. Early life Whitehead was born in Grenoside in Sheffield.
