"The Garden of Eden" is a song written and composed by Dennise Haas Norwood, and first recorded by Joe Valino, which reached Number 12 on the ''Billboard'' chart in October 1956. Valino recorded the song at his second session for Vik Records, a subsidiary of RCA. "I knew it would be a hit, even as I was recording it," he told Wayne Jancik in ''The Billboard Book of One-Hit Wonders''. In the UK the most popular version was recorded by the singer Frankie Vaughan, and gave him his first No. 1 hit in the United Kingdom in early 1957. The song first entered the UK Singles Chart on 11 January 1957, spent four weeks at the top, and 13 weeks in the charts all together. Gary Miller also released his version in the UK around the same time, and it reached No. 14 on the chart. Joe Valino
Joseph Paolino Jr. (March 9, 1929 – December 26, 1996), who performed as Joe Valino, was an American singer who had a chart hit in 1957 with "The Garden of Eden". Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, the son of Mary and Joseph Paolino, he learned piano and guitar and began performing in local clubs as a child. While still in his teens, he accompanied Sarah Vaughan in piano, and by the age of 18 had performed as a singer and pianist with the big bands of Woody Herman and Tommy Dorsey. After a spell as a professional boxer, he returned to the music business in the early 1950s, and local composer Dolores "Vicki" Silvers wrote the song "Learnin' the Blues" for him to record. He released the song in 1954 on the local Gold Star label (not the Texas label of the same name), and it became locally successful. Vik Records was a subsidiary of RCA Victor Records established in April 1953. In the ''Billboard'' issue of the 11th of that month, it was announced that RCA was launching, namelessly, a new label that was the company's first to be distributed independently. ''Billboard'' opted to use the name Label "X" for the new company. The name was kept, as the label began to hire a series of staffers and decide on a direction. Label X was officially formed on April 20, 1953. Though wholly owned and operated by RCA, it had its own independent distribution. Joe Carlton was the head of the new company. Frankie Vaughan (born Frank Fruim Abelson; 3 February 1928 – 17 September 1999) was an English singer and actor who recorded more than 80 easy listening and traditional pop singles in his lifetime. ''British Hit Singles & Albums'' (originally known as ''The Guinness Book of British Hit Singles'' and ''The Guinness Book of British Hit Albums'') was a music reference book originally published in the United Kingdom by the publishing arm of the Guinness breweries, Guinness Superlatives. Later editions were published by HiT Entertainment (who had bought the Guinness World Records brand). It listed all the singles and albums featured in the Top 75 pop charts in the UK. In 2004 the book became an amalgamation of two earlier Guinness publications, originally known as ''British Hit Singles'' and ''British Hit Albums''. The publication of this amalgamation ceased in 2006, with Guinness World Records being sold to The Jim Pattison Group, owner of ''Ripley's Believe It or Not!''. Gary Miller (singer)
Gary Miller, born Neville Williams (3 May 1924 – 15 June 1968) was an English popular music singer and actor of the 1950s and 1960s. His career spanned only 15 years before he died of a heart attack in 1968. He released 24 singles and six EPs on the Pye label between 1955 and 1967. Pye released a further compilation EP after his death. Career Miller abandoned football for a stage and radio career and he began touring the UK variety stages in 1953. He had several Top 40 singles early in his career, his debut single in 1955, " The Yellow Rose of Texas" reaching No. 13 on the UK Singles Chart. The most successful was "Robin Hood" (the theme to ''The Adventures of Robin Hood'') which spent 28 weeks in the chart, and peaked at No. 10, his only Top 10 hit. Dick James
Dick James (born Leon Isaac Vapnick; 12 December 1920 – 1 February 1986) was a British music publisher and singer. He and Brian Epstein established the Beatles' publisher Northern Songs. Later, with his son Stephen, James founded the DJM record label and recording studios, which signed Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Early life James was born on 12 December 1920 in the East End of London, to Polish Jewish immigrants. His father was a kosher butcher. He sang with North London dance bands in his early teens, and was a regular vocalist at the Cricklewood Palais by the age of seventeen. Paul Francis Gadd (born 8 May 1944), best known by his stage name Gary Glitter, is an English former singer, songwriter, and record producer.
