The Galley Slave (1919 Film)
''The Galley Slave'' (German: ''Der Galeerensträfling'') is a 1919 German silent historical adventure film directed by Rochus Gliese and Paul Wegener and starring Wegener, Lyda Salmonova, and Paul Hartmann.St. Pierre p.104 Inspired by several of the novels of Honoré de Balzac including '' Lost Illusions'', it was released in two parts on separate dates during October 1919. Although Gliese was the principal credited director, the film's star Wegener also worked on its production. It was shot at the Templehof Studios in Berlin, with sets designed by the art director Kurt Richter. Paul Wegener
Paul Wegener (11 December 1874 – 13 September 1948) was a German actor, writer, and film director known for his pioneering role in German expressionist cinema. Acting career At the age of 20, Wegener decided to end his law studies and concentrate on acting, touring the provinces before joining Max Reinhardt's acting troupe in 1906. In 1912, he turned to the new medium of motion pictures and appeared in the 1913 version of '' The Student of Prague''. It was while making this film that he first heard the old Jewish legend of the Golem and proceeded to adapt the story to film, co-directing and co-writing the script with Henrik Galeen. His first version of the tale '' The Golem'' (1915, now lost) was a success and firmly established Wegener's reputation. Lothar Müthel
Lothar Müthel (né Lothar Max Lütcke; 18 February 1896 – 4 September 1964) was a German stage and film actor and director. Career Müthel was born in Berlin, where he attended the acting school of Max Reinhardt, ''Schauspielschule, Berlin''. Following the Anchluss of Austria to Nazi Germany, Müthel was appointed as director of the Burgtheater in Vienna. He held that position from 1939 until the fall of the Nazi regime in 1945. Under his directorship in 1943, a notoriously extreme production of ''The Merchant of Venice'' was staged at the Burgtheater, with Werner Krauss as Shylock. Death Müthel died in Frankfurt am Main at age 68. Adele Sandrock (; born Adele Feldern-Förster; 19 August 1863 – 30 August 1937) was a German-Dutch actress. After a successful theatrical career, she became one of the first German movie stars. Early life Sandrock was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, the daughter of the German merchant Eduard Sandrock (1834–1897) and his Dutch wife, Johanna Simonetta ten Hagen (1833–1917). With sister Wilhelmine (1861-1948) and brother Christian (1862–1924), she grew up in Rotterdam, and, after her parents' divorce on 15 November 1869, in Berlin.
