The Galeries Victoria
The Galeries is a shopping centre in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It was formerly known as The Galeries Victoria until renamed in early 2013. It is located in the heart of the Sydney central business district, bounded by George, Pitt and Park Streets. The shopping centre sits below the Citigroup Centre office tower and beside the Sydney Hilton Hotel. The site on which The Galeries now stands was originally the Murdochs department store, later the flagship Waltons department store. The Waltons store was demolished in 1983, and the site sat vacant for years after the owner Alan Bond suffered major losses from the investment in Waltons. The new development, incorporating the high-rise Citigroup Centre and the Galeries Victoria as a podium, was completed in 2000. Citigroup Centre, Sydney
Citigroup Centre is a skyscraper located on Park Street, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The building draws its name from Citigroup Australia who is the anchor tenant. The building is one of the tallest buildings in Australia, however upon completion in 2000 it was the 8th tallest. Citigroup Centre is also the second-tallest building in the city when measured to its spire. The architect was Crone and Associates. The building has 41 levels of office space, 5 levels of underground parking and four levels of commercial space known as "The Galeries". Sydney Monorail
The Sydney Monorail (originally TNT Harbourlink and later Metro Monorail) was a single-loop monorail in Sydney, Australia, that connected Darling Harbour, Chinatown and the Sydney central business and shopping districts. It opened in July 1988 and closed in June 2013. There were eight stations on the loop, with up to six trains operating simultaneously. It served major attractions and facilities such as the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney Aquarium and Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre. Queen Victoria Building
The Queen Victoria Building (abbreviated as the QVB) is a heritage-listed late-nineteenth-century building designed by the architect George McRae located at 429–481 George Street in the Sydney central business district, in the Australian state of New South Wales. The Romanesque Revival building was constructed between 1893 and 1898 and is wide by long. The domes were built by Ritchie Brothers, a steel and metal company that also built trains, trams and farm equipment. The building fills a city block bounded by George, Market, York, and Druitt Streets. Designed as a marketplace, it was used for a variety of other purposes, underwent remodelling, and suffered decay until its restoration and return to its original use in the late twentieth century. Town Hall Railway Station, Sydney
Town Hall railway station is a heritage-listed underground commuter rail station located in the centre of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. The station opened on 28 February 1932. It is named after the Sydney Town Hall, located directly above the station. History The station is built on the site of Sydney's earliest colonial cemetery, the Old Sydney Burial Ground. In 2008, part of this cemetery was being excavated from under the Town Hall. The station opened on 28 February 1932 and was built with six platforms, which were split over two levels with three platforms on each level. Waltons was an Australian department store chain, founded by John Walton (1904–1998). History Walton bought a menswear store in 1951, located on George Street, Sydney, opposite the Queen Victoria Building and Sydney Town Hall and near Town Hall station. Over the years it was expanded along Park Street with adjoining properties purchased. In 1955, Walton formed an alliance with the American retail giant Sears, Roebuck and Co. Park Street is a street in the central business district of Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. It runs from George Street in the west to College Street in the east, where it becomes William Street. Description Park Street bisects Hyde Park, the oldest park in Australia.
