Robert Reinert
Robert Reinert (born 22 April 1872 in Vienna; died 30 August 1928 in Berlin) was a German film director and screenwriter. Born in Vienna, he moved to Munich around 1900. He wrote several novels, including "Der Weg zur Sonne" (1906) and "Krieg" (1907). His successful script for the film ''Homunculus'' (1916) led him to direct several films, most notably ''Opium'' and ''Nerven''. ''Nerven'' opened in Munich in 1919. People were hospitalized after watching the movie and one woman, after seeing it, woke up one night, went out on the street in her nightshirt and screamed "Now I am going to die! Now I am going to die!" About ''Nerven'', one recent critic wrote "''Nerven'' is a disorienting, highly experimental work. Released in 1919, before ''The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari'' (early 1920), it might have become a prototype of German Expressionist cinema if it had been widely seen." Carl De Vogt
Carl de Vogt (14 September 1885 – 16 February 1970) was a German film actor who starred in four of Fritz Lang's early films. He attended the acting school in Cologne, Germany. Together with acting he was also active as a singer and recorded several discs. His greatest hit was "Der Fremdenlegionär". An extremely successful actor in his early career, he died in relative obscurity in 1970. In 1919 and 1920, de Vogt starred in director Fritz Lang's two-part ''Spiders'' films opposite actresses Lil Dagover and Ressel Orla. In 1932, in the early sound era, he played the Prussian hero Major Schill in the big-budget historical film '' The Eleven Schill Officers''. De Vogt was married to the German film actress Cläre Lotto, and the couple had a son Karl Franz de Vogt (born 14 May 1917). He was a member of the NSDAP and the Sturmabteilung. Helena Makowska ('' née'' Woynowiczówna, 2 March 1893 – 22 August 1964) was a Polish actress. She appeared in more than 60 films between 1911 and 1958. Early life Helena Makowska was born Helena Woynowiczówna on 2 March 1893 to Ludwik Woyniewicz, a Polish engineer who worked for a Russian-Belgian company, and his wife, Stanisława (née Sauret). The family moved to Warsaw in 1903. There, Makowska attended high school and received her first theater roles. At the age of 16, Makowska married lawyer Julian Makowski, but they divorced shortly after. In 1912, Makowska traveled to Milan, where she took singing lessons. In 1913, she debuted at the Opera as Amelia in ''Il ballo in maschera'' and acted as Elena in ''Mefistofele''. Her film debut was in the 1911 short ''An Autumn Sunset Dream''. A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience.
