The Fleischmann Choir
The Fleischmann Choir is an amateur mixed-voice choir and consists of more than 140 members ranging from college students to retirees. The choir was founded by Geoffrey Spratt in November 1992. The choir specialises in the performance of large-scale works. Members are auditioned prior to joining. There are four vocal sections: soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. The choir rehearses in the Curtis Auditorium of the Cork Institute of Technology School of Music. Origins When the choir first started it was known as the Cork School of Music Symphony Orchestra Chorus. The first public performance was as part of the Cork International Choral Festival's 40th opening night celebrations on 22 April 1993 with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in the City Hall in Cork. Cork Institute of Technology (CIT; ga, Institiúid Teicneolaíochta Chorcaí) was an institute of technology, located in Cork, Ireland. Upon its dissolution, the institute had 17,000 students studying in art, business, engineering, music, drama and science disciplines. The institute had been named as Institute of Technology of the Year in ''The Sunday Times'' University Guide for Ireland on numerous occasions. On 1 January 2021, the institute merged with the Institute of Technology, Tralee to become the Munster Technological University, Ireland's second technological university. Cork International Choral Festival
The Cork International Choral Festival is held annually in Cork, Ireland and features choirs from all over the world. About 5,000 choristers take part every year; they come from all over Ireland, from Britain, from the European continent, and sometimes from as far away as Africa, America, and Asia. Since its foundation in 1954, there have been about 3,500 choir entries. The festival will take place April 18th to April 22nd 2018. History The festival was founded in 1954. It was part of An Tóstal, a national festival begun by Seán Lemass in 1952, as an attempt to set lift the country from a period of economic depression and high emigration. RTÉ Concert Orchestra
The RTÉ Concert Orchestra is one of the two full-time professional radio orchestras in Ireland that are part of RTÉ, the national broadcasting station. Since its formation as the Radio Éireann Light Orchestra in 1948, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, has grown from a small studio-based recording group to become an active 45-strong orchestra performing over eighty concerts annually. It is part of RTÉ Performing Groups. The orchestra performs classical, popular and big band evening and lunchtime concerts, covering a range of music from baroque to contemporary. Classical The period from 2003 to 2006 saw a particular emphasis on the classical repertoire under the orchestra's then principal conductor Laurent Wagner. Cork City Hall
The City Hall, Cork () is a civic building in Cork, Ireland which houses the administrative headquarters of Cork City Council. History The current building is likely the 6th or 7th city hall to have existed in Cork city. In 1833, the original building on the site was completed, when the city's corn exchange was moved from Corn Market Street to Albert Quay. The corn exchange was designed by Cork architect Henry Hill, and constructed by Sir Thomas Deane. In 1852 the building was converted and expanded upon by Sir John Benson to facilitate the Cork Exhibition, opening on 10 June 1852. In 1883, following the closure of the exhibition, the building was offered to the Cork Corporation at a price of IR£10,000 and became property of the Corporation in 1893, following the passing of the Cork Corn Markets Act, 1889. Aloys Fleischmann
Aloys Fleischmann (13 April 1910 – 21 July 1992) was an Irish composer, musicologist, professor and conductor. Life Fleischmann was born in Munich to Ireland-based German parents. Both were musicians, both graduates of the Royal Academy of Music in Munich. His father, Aloys Fleischmann senior of Dachau, organist and choirmaster at the Cathedral of St. Mary and St Anne, Cork and his mother, Tilly Fleischmann née Swertz (1882–1967), born in Cork to German parents, pianist and piano teacher. Fleischmann was educated in Scoil Íte, the school founded by Terence MacSwiney's sisters in 1916, in Christian Brothers College, Cork, and in St Finbarr's College, Farranferris. He graduated from University College Cork with a BA in 1930, was awarded the BMus in 1931, an MA in 1932, and a doctorate in music (DMus) from the National University of Ireland in 1963.
