The Fish (train)
The Fish is a passenger train that operates over the Blue Mountains between Lithgow and Sydney, Australia. In the 19th century a train from Sydney to Penrith was driven by John Herron, a large man with the nickname of ''The Big Fish''. The name transferred to the train itself and it remains in use today. The name has been applied to various Blue Mountains services over the years and today is a commuter service from Lithgow to Sydney operated by V sets. Following electrification of the Main Western line in 1958, it was operated by U set single-deck electric trains. These in turn were replaced by double-deck V sets. It is complemented by another service, ''The Chips'' and used to also run with ''The Summit'' and ''The Heron''. According to the current timetable, ''The Fish'' leaves Lithgow at 5:08am, reaches Mt Victoria at 5:37am and arrives Sydney at 7:47am. NSW TrainLink V Set
The V sets are a class of electric multiple units currently operated by NSW TrainLink. Built by Comeng between 1970 and 1989, the sets are of stainless steel construction, and are currently the oldest in the NSW TrainLink fleet. Initially introduced under the Public Transport Commission, only sets from 1977 and onwards remain in service, now operating on Interurban services throughout New South Wales on the Main Western line to Lithgow and Main Northern line to Newcastle. Lithgow Railway Station
Lithgow railway station is a heritage-listed former station master's residence and railway station and now guest accommodation and railway station located on the Main Western line at Railway Parade, Lithgow, City of Lithgow, New South Wales, Australia. It was designed and built by New South Wales Government Railways and built from 1924 to 1925. It is also known as Lithgow Railway Station Group and Residence and Eskbank East. The ''Lithgow Mercury'', is a tri-weekly English language newspaper first published in 1878 in Lithgow, New South Wales, Australia. History The ''Lithgow Mercury'' was established in 1878. Initially a weekly publication, the paper was published daily from 1949 to 1986, then tri-weekly. In 1879, the paper was purchased by Walter Scott Targett, who had started work as a compositor on the paper, and who was later elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Member for Hartley. J.P.T. Caulfield acquired the paper in 1886. He worked as editor for eighteen months, until late 1887 when he sold the paper to the proprietors of the ''Lithgow Enterprise and Australian Land Nationaliser''. The U sets were a type of electric multiple unit operated by the New South Wales Government Railways and its successors between September 1958 and November 1996. They were nicknamed U-boats. Development The New South Wales Government Railways began planning the electrification of the Main Western line over the Blue Mountains from 1949, and with that plan in full swing by the early 1950s, called tenders for 80 cars (40 motor, 20 trailer and 20 first with buffet trailer), with the contract was awarded to Commonwealth Engineering, Granville in 1954. Electric traction equipment was supplied by the Metropolitan-Vickers, Manchester.
