''The Fidelity Wars'' is the second full-length album by British indie rock band Hefner. Recorded in London over a period of twelve days at Roundhouse Studios, it was released in 1999 on Too Pure. It was the first Hefner album to feature Jack Hayter. It was reissued by lead singer Darren Hayman in 2008. "You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone" is a song by American rock band the Beach Boys from their 1972 album ''Carl and the Passions – "So Tough"''. It was written by Brian Wilson and Jack Rieley, and was issued as the album's lead single with the B-side "Cuddle Up". The single failed to chart. Background An earlier, unreleased version of the song was titled "Beatrice from Baltimore". Asked about the song in 1972, Mike Love commented, "I like the track, it's one that requires a few plays to get into it. A point about a lot of Brian's things is that they are so oblique and often complex. His music is something that you have to listen to, because he'll put in subtleties that you can listen to for a year and not hear." Gina Birch
Gina Birch is an English musician and filmmaker, best known as a founding member of post-punk rock band, the Raincoats. Born in Nottingham, Birch attended Nottingham High School for Girls, and later the Hornsey School of Art, where she formed The Raincoats with Ana da Silva in 1977. Following the first breakup of The Raincoats in 1984, Birch worked with experimental musician Mayo Thompson and his ensemble, Red Crayola, for a period in Germany. After this time, Birch formed the band Dorothy, with fellow ex-Raincoat Vicky Aspinall. The band was subsequently signed by Geoff Travis to Chrysalis Records. Following Dorothy's breakup, Birch matriculated at the Royal College of Art, where she studied film direction, and produced several dramas. Neil Yates
Neil Yates (born 1970 in Stockport, Cheshire, England) is a British jazz and folk musician. Biography Yates studied music at Salford University before moving to London to study jazz at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He lived and worked in London for eight years, playing jazz with National Youth Jazz Orchestra, Peter King, Don Weller, Denys Baptiste, Jazz Jamaica All Stars, Alex Wilson, Clark Tracey, Gary Crosby's Nu Troop and the Caroline Taylor Quintet. During this time Yates also worked as session musician for Brand New Heavies, Supergrass, Black Grape, Lighthouse Family, Alison Moyet, Will Young, Raw Stylus, Suggs, Matt Bianco, Robbie Williams and Rhian Benson. Antony Harding is an English singer, songwriter and musician from New Mexico. He grew up on the Isle of Wight. He is best known as the drummer in London band Hefner, and has also played independently as ANT and now performs solo as Antony Harding. The Beach Boys
The Beach Boys are an American Rock music, rock band that formed in Hawthorne, California, in 1961. The group's original lineup consisted of brothers Brian Wilson, Brian, Dennis Wilson, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Jack Rieley
John Frank Rieley III (November 24, 1942 – April 17, 2015) was an American record producer, songwriter, and disc jockey who managed the Beach Boys between mid-1970 and late 1973. He is credited with guiding them back to popular acclaim and was described by ''New Statesman'' as "a radio DJ turned career mentor." Rieley co-wrote a total of ten songs included on the Beach Boys' albums '' Surfs Up'' (1971), ''Carl and the Passions – "So Tough"'' (1972), and ''Holland'' (1973). He also sang lead on the ''Surf's Up'' track " A Day in the Life of a Tree" and narrated Brian Wilson's fairy tale '' Mount Vernon and Fairway'' (1972). Following his work with the Beach Boys, Rieley collaborated with artists such as Kool & the Gang, Ride, and Jaye Muller (aka Count Jaye). In 1975, Rieley released a solo album, ''Western Justice''. Darren Hayman
Darren Hayman (born 1 December 1970) is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist. He is best known as the writer, lead singer, and guitarist in Hefner. Since Hefner disbanded in 2002, Hayman has embarked on a prolific solo career releasing twelve albums under his own name and appearing on albums by Papernut Cambridge, Rotifer and The Great Electric. He has regularly worked with The Wave Pictures, producing an album for them, directing three of their music videos and briefly employing them as his backing band. In January 2011 Hayman recorded and released a song every day in the month of January, working with many collaborators. Hayman also paints and has exhibited his work at exhibitions about animals in space and racing dogs.
