''The Female'' (french: La Femme et le pantin, lit=The Woman and the Puppet, it, Femmina), released in the United Kingdom as ''A Woman Like Satan'', is a 1959 French-Italian drama film directed by Julien Duvivier. It is the fourth film adaptation of the novel '' La Femme et le pantin'' by Pierre Louÿs. Plot Mateo Diaz is a wealthy gentleman who loves and respects his wife but no longer finds her attractive because she is paralysed. He pursues Eva Marchand but she does not respond to his advances. Julien Duvivier (; 8 October 1896 – 29 October 1967) was a French film director and screenwriter. He was prominent in French cinema in the years 1930–1960. Amongst his most original films, chiefly notable are ''La Bandera (film), La Bandera'', ''Pépé le Moko'', ''Little World of Don Camillo'', ''Panic (1946 film), Panic (Panique)'', ''Voici le temps des assassins'' and '':fr:Marianne de ma jeunesse, Marianne de ma jeunesse''. Jean Renoir called him, a "great technician, [a] rigorist, a poet". Early years It was as an actor, in 1916 at the Théâtre de l'Odéon under the direction of André Antoine, that Duvivier's career began. Jess Hahn
Jesse Beryle Hahn (October 29, 1921June 29, 1998) was an American- French character actor who mostly starred in French films. Biography After serving with the Marines in the Second World War, he moved to France in 1949 and took French citizenship. Firstly a musician, he became an actor and starred in film noirs and westerns. A large man, Hahn often appeared in " strong man" roles, such as in ''Cartouche'' and '' Topkapi''. Seen mostly as a character actor in French films, he played a rare leading role in Éric Rohmer's '' The Sign of Leo''. Hahn was employed by French movie-maker Jean-Marie Pallardy, becoming one of his recurrent actors, until his retirement. Hahn died at age 76 in Saint-Malo, France. ''The Woman and the Puppet'' is a 1920 American silent film starring Geraldine Farrar and Lou Tellegen that was directed by Reginald Barker and produced by Samuel Goldwyn. Plot Based upon a review in a film publication, Don Mateo (Tellegen) attempts to bribe the mother (Dione) of Concha Perez (Farrar) so that he can use her as his toy, but Concha leaves and becomes a cigarette girl who dances at a wharf cafe. When Don Mateo discovers her there dancing for some Englishmen, he no longer believes that she is the virtuous maiden who spurned his advances. Concha convinces him that his suspicions are wrong and unwarranted. The Don is a conceited person used to adulation of senoritas, and when Concha leads him on a chase and vamps him, he becomes enraptured.
