Joyce Carol Oates (born June 16, 1938) is an American writer. Oates published her first book in 1963, and has since published 58 novels, a number of plays and novellas, and many volumes of short stories, poetry, and non-fiction. Her novels '' Black Water'' (1992), ''What I Lived For'' (1994), and ''Blonde'' (2000), and her short story collections ''The Wheel of Love'' (1970) and ''Lovely, Dark, Deep: Stories'' (2014) were each finalists for the Pulitzer Prize. She has won many awards for her writing, including the National Book Award, for her novel ''them'' (1969), two O. Henry Awards, the National Humanities Medal, and the Jerusalem Prize (2019). Oates taught at Princeton University from 1978 to 2014, and is the Roger S. Berlind '52 Professor Emerita in the Humanities with the Program in Creative Writing. ''The Falls'' is a 2001 crime novel by Ian Rankin. It is the twelfth of the Inspector Rebus novels. Plot summary A student vanishes in Edinburgh and her wealthy family of bankers ensures Lothian and Borders Police is under pressure to find her. The novel presents in detail a difficult case, where the newly appointed (and first female) Chief Super, Gill Templer, is trying to please her superiors and manipulate her CID officers. The Falls is an open-air shopping mall in Kendall, Florida. The mall has 111 upscale stores. The mall's anchor store is Macy's. Bloomingdale's was an anchor at this mall, but closed on March 20, 2020. This mall also features a movie theater, which is called Regal Entertainment Group (United Artists Falls 12), and is currently managed and 50% owned by the Simon Property Group. History The Falls opened in 1980 as an upscale, open-air plaza. As its name implies, the center is designed around a lushly-landscaped man-made lagoon featuring numerous pools, waterfalls and bridges accented with modern sculpture pieces and decorative lighting. The Falls is a community of about 100 people located in the northern part of Colchester County, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is located six miles south of the village of Tatamagouche on Route 311 which leads to Truro, the county seat. Early records refer to the settlement as Tatamagouche River. The first permanent settlers were Highland Scots from the Parish of Clyne, Sutherland, Scotland, who first broke the forest in 1820. They were former crofters on the Sutherland Estate who were removed as part of an agricultural improvement scheme. Jon Erich Garcia (born July 18, 1979) is an American director, documentary filmmaker, screenwriter and musician based in Portland, Oregon. ''The Falls'' is a 1980 film directed by Peter Greenaway. It was Greenaway's first feature-length film after many years making shorts. It does not have a traditional dramatic narrative; it takes the form of a mock documentary in 92 short parts. Plot The world has been struck by a mysterious incident called the "Violent Unknown Event" or VUE, which has killed many people and left a great many survivors suffering from a common set of symptoms: mysterious ailments (some appearing to be mutations of evolving into a bird-like form), dreaming of water (categorised by form, such as Category 1, Flight, or Category 3, Waves) and becoming obsessed with birds and flight.
