The Ex-Convict's Plunge
''The Ex-Convicts Plunge'' is a 1913 American silent film drama produced by Hardee Kirkland. The film stars William Stowell, Harry J. Lonsdale and Adrienne Kroell. The film status is uncertain but a release flier survives which is now at the Margaret Herrick Library at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, it was part of the Charles G. Clarke collection. The short movie was released on April 10, 1913, the reel was around 600 feet (nearly 200 meters) long and was in the same reel with the documentary ''Scenes in Manila''. Plot The trials of the convict frequently become most acute after he is released from confinement. The serpentine trail of the stripes seems indelible; the prison pallor, the shuffling gait, the furtive look all combine to make him a marked, a shunned and a hunted man. Adrienne Kroell
Adrienne Kroell (December 13, 1892- October 2, 1949), was an American actress. She appeared in over 75 to 90 films between 1909 and 1914. She was born in Chicago, Illinois. She later moved to St. Louis, Missouri, and attended Yeatman High School. Kroell began acting on stage in St. Louis in 1906 after she won a beauty contest there. She first appeared in film in 1909 and appeared in films mostly made by the Selig Polyscope Company until 1914. '' The Cowboy Millionaire'' was her first film appearance which also starred Tom Mix. She retired from acting in 1917 after she developed arthritis. On October 2, 1949, Kroell died at Sturgis Convelescent Home in Evanston, Illinois, of complications from arthritis and was buried at Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago. William Stowell
William Stowell (March 13, 1885 – November 24, 1919) was an American silent film actor. A handsome actor with matinee idol good looks, Stowell was signed into film in 1909 with IMP (forerunner of Universal Studios), and debuted by starring in the popular hit '' The Cowboy Millionaire'' (1909), also starring Tom Mix. Between 1909 and 1919 Stowell starred in 119 silent films, often playing in over 10 films a year. In 1915 he starred in ''The Great Question'' alongside actors such as Harold Lockwood with American Studios. In 1916 he starred in ''The Love Hermit'' portraying Jack Hillman, and began appearing in a series of Universal features that paired him with Lon Chaney and Dorothy Phillips. Harry Zephaniah Johnson (6 July 1945 – 3 April 2013), known by the stage name Harry J, was a Jamaican reggae record producer. Hardee Kirkland (May 23, 1868 – February 18, 1929) was an American film actor and film director, director of the silent film, silent era who appeared on stage. Kirkland was born in Savannah, Georgia, Savannah, Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia, the son of former Confederate Brigadier General William Whedbee Kirkland and the older brother of the actress Elizabeth Kirkland, who performed as Odette Tyler. He appeared in more than 40 films between 1915 and 1925. He also directed more than 30 films between 1912 and 1914. He died in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 60. Selig Polyscope Company
The Selig Polyscope Company was an American motion picture company that was founded in 1896 by William Selig in Chicago. The company produced hundreds of early, widely distributed commercial moving pictures, including the first films starring Tom Mix, Harold Lloyd, Colleen Moore, and Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle. Selig Polyscope also established Southern California's first permanent movie studio, in the historic Edendale district of Los Angeles. Ending film production in 1918, the business, based on its film production animals, became an animal and prop supplier to other studios and a zoo and amusement park attraction in East Los Angeles until the Great Depression in the 1930s. Silent Film
A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience. Harry J. Lonsdale (born Henry Gittus Lonsdale; 6 December 1862 – 8 February 1939) was a British born actor stage and silent film actor. He played leading parts. and married stage actress Alice Lonnon and then divorced. Lonsdale was born in Worcester, and died in Derby. The National Portrait Gallery has a photograph of him in costume as the Marquis de Corneville in ''Les Cloches de Corneville'' from 1890. Lonsdale had roles in several Colin Campbell directed films for Selig.
