The Esso Australian Jazz Summit
''The Esso Australian Jazz Summit'' is a live compilation album of jazz music recorded live at the Bondi Beach. The album was nominated for 1987 ARIA Award for Best Jazz Album. Background The Esso Australian Jazz Summit was held on Saturday 22 February 1986 at Sydney's Bondi Beach. The Summit had 13 acts set to play but the show wash rained out after only 10 had performed. Don Burrows Quintet, Sandy Evans Trio, Southern Cross Jazz Quartet, Andy Sugg and Andy Vance Duo, Dave Dallwitz Sydney Big Band, Allan Browne Band, Merve Acheson and the Mainstreamers, Jazzmanian Quartet, Rick Price Quartet and NSW Conservatorium Big Band all performed. Nova Dreams, Schmoe and Co and the Bernie McGann Quartet were listed did not get to play. The summit was recorded by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and was broadcast on ABC TV as part of ''The Burrows Collections'' series. James Morrison (jazz Musician)
James Lloyd Morrison AM (born 11 November 1962) is an Australian jazz musician. Although his main instrument is trumpet, he has also performed on trombone, tuba, euphonium, flugelhorn, saxophone, clarinet, double bass, guitar, and piano. He is a composer, writing jazz charts for ensembles of various sizes and proficiency levels. He composed and performed the opening fanfare at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. In 2009, he joined Steve Pizzati and Warren Brown as a presenter on ''Top Gear Australia''. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2010 Morrison and a cappella group, The Idea of North, won Best Jazz Album, for their collaboration on '' Feels Like Spring''. In 2012 Morrison was appointed as Artistic Director of the Queensland Music Festival for the 2013 and 2015 festivals. Joe Lane (singer)
Joe Lane (21 March 1927 – 13 April 2007) was an Australian Bebop jazz vocalist based in Sydney. Born Keith Joseph Lane in Sydney, Australia, he first heard bebop whilst in the army in 1947. After leaving the army he studied with conductor and teacher of advanced harmony Roy Maling, and then introduced vocal bebop into Sydney clubs such as El Rocco, the Arabian, and the Mocambo. In 1949 he formed a vocal group with Ian Gunter, which worked at Sammy Lee's Club 47. He took on the stage name of Joe "Bebop" Lane. In the 1950s Lane led the Dee Jays, which singer Johnny O'Keefe later took over, and managed to secure jamming sessions with visiting Americans, including members of the Lionel Hampton and Stan Kenton bands. He also worked on the ''Cool for Cats'' TV show in Melbourne. 1968 saw Lane moving to New Zealand where he established his own jazz club/workshop in Auckland, presenting concerts and master-classes on the bebop vocal style. The First Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards (generally known as the ARIA Music Awards or simply The ARIAS) was held on 2 March 1987 at the Sheraton Wentworth Hotel in Sydney with Elton John as the host.
