An esplanade or promenade is a long, open, level area, usually next to a river or large body of water, where people may walk. The historical definition of ''esplanade'' was a large, open, level area outside fortress or city walls to provide clear fields of fire for the fortress's guns. In modern usage, the space allows the area to be paved as a pedestrian walk; esplanades are often on sea fronts and allow walking whatever the state of the tide, without having to walk on the beach. The Lower Permian Esplanade Sandstone is a cliff-forming, resistant sandstone, dark red, geologic unit found in the Grand Canyon. The rock unit forms a resistant shelf in the west Grand Canyon, south side of the Colorado River, at the east of the Toroweap Fault, down-dropped to west, southeast of Toroweap Overlook (North Rim, at Lava Falls), and west of Havasupai. Ryde Esplanade railway station serves the town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight, and forms part of the Ryde Transport Interchange. Located on the sea front, it is the most convenient station for the majority of the town. Ryde Esplanade is also the location of the principal ticket office and all lost property facilities for the Island Line. The larger St John's Road station houses the area office and is next to Ryde Traincare Depot, where all in-house maintenance for the line takes place. Esplanade MRT station is an underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station on the Circle line (CCL). Situated in Downtown Core, Singapore, it is at the junction of Bras Basah Road, Raffles Boulevard and Nicoll Highway. As the name suggests, the station serves the Esplanade, alongside various developments such as War Memorial Park, Suntec City Mall and the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Esplanade railway station was a railway station on the Transperth network. It was located on the Fremantle line, 19.8 kilometres from Perth station between Bathers Beach and Esplanade Park. History On 22 October 1898, the Fremantle line was extended south from Fremantle to Robbs Jetty. For the staging of the 1987 America's Cup, the existing narrow and standard gauge tracks were combined as one dual gauge line with three temporary stations erected, one of which was The Esplanade. Elizabeth Quay railway station, formerly known as Esplanade station, serves the southern end of Perth's central business district including Elizabeth Quay and the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. It is part of the Transperth network. History Elizabeth Quay, then known as Esplanade Station, was built as part of the New MetroRail project. Construction began in 2004 with the station opening under the name Esplanade station on 15 October 2007, as the terminus of the Joondalup line. On 23 December 2007, the Mandurah line opened and through services commenced.
