The Escapist (2002 Film)
''The Escapist'' is a 2002 thriller film directed by Gillies MacKinnon and written by Nick Perry. It stars Jonny Lee Miller, Andy Serkis and Gary Lewis. Synopsis Denis Hopkins (Jonny Lee Miller) seems to have the perfect life, a job as a pilot, a beautiful home and wife Valerie ( Paloma Baeza) who is expecting their first child. One night, Denis and Valerie's home is broken into by a borderline psychotic thief named Ricky Barnes (Andy Serkis) who shoots and kills Valerie, coldly saying to Denis: 'I'm going to let you live'. Valerie dies while being transported to the hospital, and the baby narrowly survives childbirth, leaving Denis devastated. Barnes is sentenced to twenty years in Sullom Voe Prison, which is on a remote island in the middle of the North Sea. Gillies MacKinnon
Gillies MacKinnon (born 8 January 1948, Glasgow) is a Scottish film director, writer and painter. He attended the Glasgow School of Art where he studied mural painting. Following this he became an art teacher and cartoonist, and about this time he traveled with a nomadic tribe in the Sahara for six months. In the 1970s he studied at the Middlesex Polytechnic and in the 1980s in the National Film and Television School. He made a short film called ''Passing Glory'' as his graduation piece, a recreation of Glasgow in the 1950s and 1960s. It was premiered at the 1986 Edinburgh International Film Festival, where it won the first Scottish Film Prize. Nick Perry (writer)
Nick Perry is a British playwright and screenwriter. He is a graduate of the University of Hull and the National Film and Television School. His first play ''Arrivederci Millwall'' was produced by The Combination at The Albany Empire, Deptford in 1985 and jointly won the Samuel Beckett Award. ''Smallholdings'' was first performed at the King's Head Theatre in 1986 and ''The Vinegar Fly'' at the Soho Poly in 1988. ''Near Cricket St Thomas, 1919'' was directed by Alan Ayckbourn at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough in 1997. Paloma Baeza
Paloma Baeza (born 1 May 1975) is a British actress and director of English and Mexican heritage. Her 2017 film ''Poles Apart'' won the BAFTA for best animated short film in 2018. Biography Baeza was born in London and spent her childhood in Mexico. Her Mexican father and her British mother were musicians who met in the UK.
