''The Epic of the Wheat'' was a planned trilogy by American author Frank Norris. Two of the three works were published, but the third was not written at the time of Norris' death. Following his 1899 success ''McTeague'', Norris formulated his idea for a trilogy of novels on the topic of wheat, his ''Epic of the Wheat'', from its growth in California in '' The Octopus'', to its distribution via Chicago in his posthumously published 1903 work ''The Pit'', to its consumption in a famished region of Europe in ''The Wolf''. He had not begun writing ''The Wolf'' before his death. Trilogy
A trilogy is a set of three works of art that are connected and can be seen either as a single work or as three individual works. They are commonly found in literature, film, and video games, and are less common in other art forms. Frank Norris
Benjamin Franklin Norris Jr. (March 5, 1870 – October 25, 1902) was an American journalist and novelist during the Progressive Era, whose fiction was predominantly in the naturalist genre. His notable works include '' McTeague: A Story of San Francisco'' (1899), '' The Octopus: A Story of California'' (1901) and '' The Pit'' (1903). Life Norris was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1870. His father, Benjamin, was a self-made Chicago businessman and his mother, Gertrude Glorvina Doggett, had a stage career. In 1884 the family moved to San Francisco where Benjamin went into real estate. In 1887, after the death of his brother and a brief stay in London, young Norris went to Académie Julian in Paris where he studied painting for two years and was exposed to the naturalist novels of Émile Zola. McTeague
''McTeague: A Story of San Francisco'', otherwise known as simply ''McTeague'', is a novel by Frank Norris, first published in 1899. It tells the story of a couple's courtship and marriage, and their subsequent descent into poverty and violence as the result of jealousy and greed. The book was the basis for the films ''McTeague'' (1916) and Erich von Stroheim's ''Greed'' (1924). It was also adapted as an opera by William Bolcom in 1992. ''The Pit: A Story of Chicago'' is a 1903 novel by Frank Norris. Set in the wheat speculation trading pits at the Chicago Board of Trade Building, it was the second book in what was to be the trilogy ''The Epic of the Wheat''. Peritonitis is inflammation of the localized or generalized peritoneum, the lining of the inner wall of the abdomen and cover of the abdominal organs.
