The Empath
"The Empath" is the twelfth episode of the third season of the American science fiction television series ''Star Trek''. Written by Joyce Muskat and directed by John Erman, it was first broadcast on December 6, 1968. In the episode, while visiting a doomed planet, the landing party is subjected to torturous experiments by powerful aliens. This episode is one of a handful not screened in the United Kingdom by the BBC for many years, owing to its disturbing content (torture). It was not broadcast by the BBC until January 1994. The Original Series
''Star Trek'' is an American science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry that follows the adventures of the starship and its crew. It later acquired the retronym of ''Star Trek: The Original Series'' (''TOS'') to distinguish the show within the media franchise that it began. The show is set in the Milky Way galaxy, circa 2266–2269. The ship and crew are led by Captain James T. Supernova
A supernova is a powerful and luminous explosion of a star. It has the plural form supernovae or supernovas, and is abbreviated SN or SNe. This transient astronomical event occurs during the last evolutionary stages of a massive star or when a white dwarf is triggered into runaway nuclear fusion. The original object, called the ''progenitor'', either collapses to a neutron star or black hole, or is completely destroyed. The peak optical luminosity of a supernova can be comparable to that of an entire galaxy before fading over several weeks or months. Supernovae are more energetic than novae. In Latin language, Latin, ''nova'' means "new", referring astronomically to what appears to be a temporary new bright star. Fred Freiberger
Fred Freiberger (February 19, 1915March 2, 2003) was an American film and television writer and television producer, whose career spanned four decades and work on such films as ''The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms'' (1953) and TV series including ''Ben Casey'' (1963–64), ''The Wild Wild West'' (1965), ''Star Trek'' (1968–69) and '' Space: 1999'' (1976–77). Freiberger was the producer of the third and final season of science-fiction series ''Star Trek'', between 1968 and 1969. His screenwriting credits include 13 films made between 1946 and 1958. He appeared as himself in the short documentary ''Funny Old Guys'', which aired as part of the HBO series ''Still Kicking, Still Laughing'' in 2003, a few months after his death in March. Eugene Wesley Roddenberry Sr. (August 19, 1921 – October 24, 1991) was an American television screenwriter, producer, and creator of ''Star Trek: The Original Series'', its sequel spin-off series ''Star Trek: The Animated Series,'' and ''Star Trek: The Next Generation''. Vulcan Nerve Pinch
In the fictional ''Star Trek'' universe, the Vulcan nerve pinch is a technique used mainly by Vulcans to render unconsciousness by pinching a pressure point at the base of the victim's neck. Origin The script for " The Enemy Within" stated that Spock " kayoes" (Knocks Out) Captain Kirk (William Shatner)'s duplicate, but Leonard Nimoy, who opposed the Vietnam War and supported Eugene McCarthy, felt that such a brutal action would be unnecessarily violent for a Vulcan. He therefore invented an alternative by suggesting that Vulcans may know enough about human anatomy, or they may have the ability to project telepathic energy from their fingertips, that they could render a human unconscious. A solar flare is an intense localized eruption of electromagnetic radiation in the Sun's atmosphere.
