''The Dumb Girl of Portici'' is a 1916 American silent historical drama film directed by Phillips Smalley and Lois Weber and starring Anna Pavlova, Rupert Julian and Wadsworth Harris. It was adapted by Weber from the libretto by Germain Delavigne and Eugène Scribe for Daniel Auber's 1828 opera '' La muette de Portici'' (''The Mute of Portici''). The film marked Pavlova's only feature film performance. Overview The film was Universal's most expensive film to that date, made at a cost at approximately $300,000. Phillips Smalley
Wendell Phillips Smalley (August 7, 1865 – May 2, 1939) was an American silent film director and actor. Biography Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was the grandson of Wendell Phillips; he was the son of George Washburn Smalley, a war correspondent, and his wife Phoebe Garnaut, adopted by Phillips. He matriculated at Balliol College, Oxford in 1886. Smalley began his career in vaudeville and acted in more than 200 films between 1910 and his death in 1939. He began directing in 1911 and made more than 300 films by 1921. Smalley was married to actress, writer, director, and producer Lois Weber from April 29, 1904, to 1922.Ancestry.com. ''La muette de Portici'' (''The Mute Girl of Portici'', or ''The Dumb Girl of Portici''), also called ''Masaniello'' () in some versions, is an opera in five acts by Daniel Auber, with a libretto by Germain Delavigne, revised by Eugène Scribe. The work has an important place in music history as the earliest French grand opera. It is also known for its alleged role in the Belgian Revolution of 1830. Background The opera was first given at the Salle Le Peletier of the Paris Opéra on 29 February 1828. The role of Masaniello was taken by the famous tenor Adolphe Nourrit and Princess Elvire was sung by Laure Cinti-Damoreau. The dancer Lise Noblet played the mute title role, a part later taken by other dancers such as Marie Taglioni, Fanny Elssler and Pauline Leroux, also the actress Harriet Smithson (the future wife of Hector Berlioz). Lina Basquette (born Lena Copeland Baskette; April 19, 1907 – September 30, 1994) was an American actress. She is noted for her 75-year career in entertainment, which began during the silent film era. Talented as a dancer, she was paid as a girl for performing and gained her first film contract at age nine. In her acting career, Basquette may have been best known for her role as Judith in ''The Godless Girl'' (1929) The film was based on the life of Queen Silver, known as a 20th-century child prodigy, and feminist and socialist activist. Basquette also was noted for her several marriages, including her first, to the much older noted producer, Sam Warner, founder of Warner Bros. film studio. When her film career declined, she returned for a period to dancing and stage performances. After she retired from the entertainment world, in 1947 Basquette moved to Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where she became a noted breeder of Great Danes; her dogs won numerous professional show prizes. ... Nigel De Brulier (born Francis George Packer; 8 August 1877 – 30 January 1948) was an English stage and film actor who began his career in the United Kingdom before relocating to the United States. Biography De Brulier was born in Frenchay, a suburb of Bristol on August 8, 1877 as Francis George Packer, the son of James Packer, a Gloucestershire coachman, and his wife Louisa Packer (née Field). De Brulier launched his career as an actor and singer on the stage in his native country and transferred to the American stage after moving to Canada and then to the United States in 1898. In the 1900 U.S. census he was recorded as Francis G. Packer, butler, in a private household in Denver, Colorado. His first film role was a poet in ''The Pursuit of the Phantom'' in 1914. Laura Oakley
Laura Oakley (July 10, 1879 January 30, 1957) was an American silent film actress. Biography Born in Oakland, California, on July 10, 1879, Oakley was signed in 1912 by the Keystone Film Company and starred in about 50 films before her retirement from film in 1920. She starred with William Garwood in films such as '' Lord John in New York'' and '' The Grey Sisterhood''. In 1913, Oakley was elected police chief of Universal City, California, shortly after it was incorporated, when 8 of the 28 city's official positions were won by women. A little over a year later, she was sworn in as police officer number 99 of Los Angeles. In September 1915, Oakley married Universal Pictures cinematographer Milton Moore. Oakley died on January 30, 1957, in Altadena, California, survived by two children and six grandchildren. John Hartford Hoxie (January 11, 1885 – March 28, 1965) was an American rodeo performer and motion-picture actor whose career was most prominent in the silent film era of the 1910s through the 1930s. Hoxie is best recalled for his roles in Western (genre), Westerns and rarely strayed from the genre. Early life Born in Kingfisher Creek in Indian Territory (now the state of Oklahoma), Hoxie was the son of a veterinarian father, Bart "Doc" Hoxie, who was killed in a horse accident just weeks before Jack's birth, and a half–Nez Perce tribe, Nez Perce mother (some reports list her as Cherokee), Matilda E. Hoxie (''née'' Quick). After his father's death, his mother and he moved to northern Idaho where, at an early age, Hoxie became a working cowboy and ranch hand. Matilda married a rancher and horse trader named Calvin Scott Stone.
