''The Diamond Crown'', from Edison Studios, was a 1913 American silent film (short) written and directed by J. Searle Dawley. It was the first of three "Kate Kirby's Cases" detective stories made in 1913 for Edison before Dawley and actress Laura Sawyer left Edison for Famous Players Film Co. later that year, where they produced three more. This film was also Justina Huff's debut in motion pictures. ''The Diamond Crown'' was released in the United States on July 12, 1913. This film is considered lost. Plot The Kinetogram This story, the first of the series, introduces the daughter of a retired police officer, Kate Kirby, who receives employment with the police department. Mrs. Wethersby comes to the station with the complaint that several thefts have been committed in her house, and Kate is allowed to undertake the investigation as her first case. Laura Sawyer
Laura Sawyer (February 3, 1885 – September 7, 1970) was an American film actress on stage and in silent films. Early life Sawyer was born in Iron County, Missouri, the daughter of Alvah Hayden and Laurette Sawyer.Corpus Christi Times (Corpus Christi, Texas) September 9, 1970 Her father was a doctor. By 1900 she was a boarder at the Ursuline Academy in St. Louis. Career Sawyer began her career on stage with the Otis Skinner theatrical company and performed in Shakespeare's plays for two years. She also toured with E. H. Sothern. She joined the Edison Studios while still in her early twenties. She almost immediately found stardom at Edison and remained with the studio until 1913. Her most memorable performance during the period was probably playing the title role in ''The Lighthouse Keeper's Daughter'' (1912). Edison Studios
Edison Studios was an American film production organization, owned by companies controlled by inventor and entrepreneur, Thomas Edison. The studio made close to 1,200 films, as part of the Edison Manufacturing Company (1894–1911) and then Thomas A. Edison, Inc. (1911–1918), until the studio's closing in 1918. Of that number, 54 were feature length, and the remainder were shorts. All of the company's films have fallen into the public domain because they were released before 1925. History The first production facility was Edison's Black Maria studio, in West Orange, New Jersey, built in the winter of 1892–93. The second facility, a glass-enclosed rooftop studio built at 41 East 21st Street in Manhattan's entertainment district, opened in 1901. The Famous Players Film Company was a film company founded in 1912 by Adolph Zukor in partnership with the Frohman brothers, powerful New York City theatre impresario. History Discussions to form the company were held at The Lambs, a famous theater club where Charles and Daniel Frohman were members. The company advertised "Famous Players in Famous Plays" and its first release was the French film ''Les Amours de la reine Élisabeth'' (1912) starring Sarah Bernhardt and Lou Tellegen. Its first actual production was ''The Count of Monte Cristo'' (1912, released 1913), directed by Edwin S. Porter and starring James O'Neill, the father of dramatist Eugene O'Neill. In 1914, the company purchased the former headquarters of New York City's Ninth Mounted Cavalry unit at 221 West 26th Street in Manhattan. Charles Stanton Ogle
Charles Stanton Ogle (June 5, 1865 – October 11, 1940) was an American stage and silent-film actor. He was the first actor to portray Frankenstein's monster in a motion picture in 1910 and played Long John Silver in ''Treasure Island'' in 1920. Biography Born in Steubenville, Ohio, Ogle is the son Joseph Ogle, was the son of Irish immigrants, and worked as a Methodist Minister. His mother, Anna C. Mast, was of German descent and used to work as a gold shop seller. Ogle attended the University of Illinois College of Law and practiced law for about two years while pursuing a Bachelor of Laws degree. Ogle initially performed in live theatre, making his first appearance on Broadway in 1905. Three years later, he embarked on a film career, initially working at Edison Studios in The Bronx, New York. Justina Huff
Justina Huff (September 8, 1893 – June 29, 1977) was an American actress of the silent film era. Early life Justina Huff was born in Columbus, Georgia, in 1893. She was the oldest daughter of Thomas D. Huff and Lucinda (Salisbury) Huff. She had three older brothers; Thomas Salisbury, Mercer and Robert, one younger sister Louise Huff and one younger brother, T. D. Jr. Her grandfather was William Salisbury, the owner of the local newspaper The Enquirer-Sun. He was murdered in 1878 by a local man who was called out as a troublemaker in an editorial penned by Justina’s father, the city editor of that paper at the time. The family moved to New York City around 1906 after the company Thomas Huff worked for was sold. In 1908, Justina won a scholarship to attend Horace Mann Institute in Manhattan.
