The Devil Never Sleeps (film)
''The Devil Never Sleeps'' ( es, El diablo nunca duerme) is a 1994 Mexican-American documentary film directed by Lourdes Portillo and produced by Portillo and Michelle Valladares. In 2020, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Plot Film maker Lourdes Portillo gets a call that her uncle Oscar had died. Initial cause of death was claimed to have been a heart attack but police later ruled his death as a suicide. Portillo goes to her hometown of Chihuahua, Mexico to find out how her uncle died. Interviewing family members and friends of Oscar, Portillo finds out details of her uncle she never heard before. Lourdes Portillo
Lourdes Portillo is a Mexican film director, producer, and writer. Biography Portillo got her first filmmaking experience at the age of twenty-one when a friend in Hollywood asked her to help out on a documentary. Her formal training began several years later. She has thus been making award-winning films about Latin American, Mexican, and Chicano/a experiences and social justice issues both as a director and screenwriter for about forty years. Since her first film in 1979, After the Earthquake/Despues del Terremoto, she has produced over 12 works that demonstrate her work as not only a director, but also an activist, artist, and journalist. While the majority of her work is in the documentary film genre, she has also created video installations and screen writings. Emmanuel Levy
Emmanuel Levy (19001986) was a Manchester painter, teacher and art critic. Career Levy studied art in Manchester, London and Paris. Under Pierre Valette at the Manchester School of Art he was a fellow student of LS Lowry. In the beginning he was interested in Cubism, Expressionism and Surrealism but discarded them later for a more naturalistic style, although within it is range was wide. His central theme was the human condition, in which he produced some powerful works. Levy’s first exhibition was in 1924 at the Manchester City Gallery, which was to be the first of many both at home and abroad. The ''Albuquerque Journal'' is the largest newspaper in the U.S. state of New Mexico. History The ''Golden Gate'' newspaper was founded in June 1880. In the fall of 1880, the owner of the ''Golden Gate'' died and Journal Publishing Company was created. Journal Publishing changed the paper name to ''Albuquerque Daily Journal'' and issued its first edition of the ''Albuquerque Daily Journal'' on October 14, 1880. Stephen Holden (born July 18, 1941) is an American writer, poet, and music and film critic. Biography Holden earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Yale University in 1963. He worked as a photo editor, staff writer, and eventually became an A&R executive for RCA Records before turning to writing pop music reviews and related articles for ''Rolling Stone'' magazine, ''Blender'', ''The Village Voice'', ''The Atlantic'', and '' Vanity Fair'', among other publications.
