Darling River
The Darling River ( Paakantyi: ''Baaka'' or ''Barka'') is the third-longest river in Australia, measuring from its source in northern New South Wales to its conflu ence with the Murray River at Wentworth, New South Wales. Including its longest contiguous tributaries it is long, making it the longest river system in Australia. The Darling River is the outback's most famous waterway. The Darling is in poor health, suffering from over-allocation of its waters to irrigation, pollution from pesticide runoff, and prolonged drought. During drought periods in 2019 it barely flowed at all. The river has a high salt content and declining water quality. Increased rainfall in its catchment in 2010 improved its flow, but the health of the river will depend on long-term management. Darling Scarp
The Darling Scarp, also referred to as the Darling Range or Darling Ranges, is a low escarpment running north–south to the east of the Swan Coastal Plain and Perth, Western Australia. The escarpment extends generally north of Bindoon, to the south of Pemberton. The adjacent Darling Plateau goes easterly to include Mount Bakewell near York and Mount Saddleback near Boddington. It was named after the Governor of New South Wales, Lieutenant-General Ralph Darling. History The feature was first recorded as General Darling Range by Charles Fraser, Government Botanist with Captain James Stirling aboard in March 1827. Maps from the 1830s show the scarp labelled " General Darlings Range"; this later became Darling Range, a name by which the formation was still commonly known in the late 20th century despite common understanding of it being an escarpment. ''The Darling of Paris'' is a 1917 American silent romantic drama film directed by J. Gordon Edwards and starring Theda Bara and Glen White. It was a very loose film adaptation of the 1831 novel ''The Hunchback of Notre-Dame'' by Victor Hugo. It was produced by William Fox. ''The Darling of Paris'' was later re-edited from six to five reels and re-released by Fox on February 16, 1919. The film is now considered lost. Plot The wealthy girl Esmeralda (Theda Bara) is kidnapped by gypsies at birth and becomes, as one might assume, the darling of Paris. She is loved by the bell ringer and former hunchback Quasimodo ( Glen White), Frollo ( Walter Law), the wicked surgeon who cares for him, and an equally wicked Captain Phoebus (Herbert Heyes). The Darling Buds
The Darling Buds are an alternative rock band from Newport, South Wales. The band formed in 1986 and were named after the H. E. Bates novel '' The Darling Buds of May'' – a title taken in turn, from the third line of Shakespeare's Sonnet 18: "Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May". Career Influenced by the catchy simple sound of the early Beatles as well as that of Blondie, the band created melodic, hook-driven, short-duration singles. The Darling DeMaes are a Canadian indie rock band formed in 2007 in Montreal. The band consists of guitarist and singer/songwriter Erik Virtanen, guitarist Buz (Marc-André Mongrain), and vocalist/guitarist Tasha Cyr. Winter Keep Us Warm Acoustic EP In May 2007, the DeMaes independently released their 8-song debut “Winter Keep Us Warm”, produced by Mark Andrew Lawson at Red Rhino Recording Studios in Montreal. The percussionless EP was recorded live-off-the-floor and was intended as a demo tape to help the band book shows. Instead, the demo was released as an acoustic EP and received critical acclamations by reviewers and charted on university radio stations. ''The Darling Buds of May'' is a Television in the United Kingdom, British comedy drama television series, produced by ITV Yorkshire, Yorkshire Television for the ITV (TV network), ITV network, first broadcast between 7 April 1991 and 4 April 1993. The first six episodes of Series 1 and the first two of Series 2 are adaptations of the 1958 novel The Darling Buds of May (novel), of the same name, and three of its four sequels, by H. E. Bates. The remaining episodes are original storylines based on the same format. Set in rural 1950s Kent, it follows the life of the Larkin family.
