The Dark Stairway (1953 Film)
''The Dark Stairway'' is a 1953 British short film. It was one of a series of shorts made for British cinemas as second features in the 1950s made by Anglo-Amalgamated at the Merton Park Studios as part of the '' Scotland Yard'' film series. They are narrated by crime writer Edgar Lustgarten, and were subsequently broadcast as television episodes. The film was also known as '' The Greek Street Murder''.''Scotland Yard'' at CTVA

Plot

A blind man, George Benson, witnesses the murder of Harry Carpenter by Joe Lloyd. Benson finds himself accused of the murder. Inspector Jack Harmer finds the murder weapon and discovers Carpenter was murdered because he betrayed Lloyd to the police. Benson manages to identify Lloyd by his ring, voice and hair products' smell.

Edwin Richfield
Edwin Richfield (11 September 1921 – 2 August 1990) was an English actor. Career Richfield starred in the television series ''Interpol Calling'' (1959). He was ''The Odd Man'' in Granada Television's series of the same name in the early 1960s. Richfield played regular guest roles in the 1960s spy series '' The Avengers'', frequently cast as a villain. He was the only actor – other than Patrick Macnee – to appear in each of the six seasons of the programme. ''The Dark Stairway'' is a 1938 British crime film, directed by Arthur B. Woods and starring Hugh Williams, Chili Bouchier and Garry Marsh. The film was a quota quickie production, based on the 1931 novel ''From This Dark Stairway'' by Mignon G. Eberhart. In the film, professional jealousy and rivalry erupts in a hospital over the discovery of a revolutionary new formula for anaesthetic, leading to murder. Nat Cohen (23 December 1905 – 10 February 1988)William D. Edgar Marcus Lustgarten (3 May 1907 – 15 December 1978) was a British broadcaster and noted crime writer. Biography Born in the Broughton Park area of Salford, Lancashire, he was the son of Joseph and Sara (née Finklestein) Lustgarten. His father was a Romanian-Jewish barrister. Lustgarten was educated at Manchester Grammar School and St John's College, Oxford. He was President of the Oxford Union for the Hilary term of 1930. His years at the bar—he was a practising barrister, 1930–40—provided the background to his crime novels and his studies in true crime. In 1932 he married Joyce Goldstone in Manchester. She came from a family of jewellers. She died in 1972. There was no issue.
