The Courage
The Courage (formerly known as "Noah Gundersen & the Courage") was an indie band from Centralia, Washington. History Seattle-based singer-songwriter Noah Gundersen formed the band The Courage in 2008 in Centralia, Washington. Other founding members of the group included Gundersen's younger sister Abby on violin and backing vocals and three friends, Michael Porter on electric guitar, Chris Judd on bass guitar, and Keelan O'Hara on drums. The Courage would take its final form with Ivan Gunderson (of no relation to Noah and Abby) on drums and Travis Ehrenstrom on the bass guitar. Centralia, Washington
Centralia () is a city in Lewis County, Washington, United States. It is located along Interstate 5 near the midpoint between Seattle and Portland, Oregon. The city had a population of 18,183 at the 2020 census. Centralia is twinned with Chehalis, located to the south near the confluence of the Chehalis and Newaukum rivers. History In the 1850s and 1860s, Centralia's Borst Home, at the confluence of the Chehalis and Skookumchuck Rivers, was the site of a toll ferry, and the halfway stopping point for stagecoaches operating between Kalama, Washington and Tacoma. In 1850, J. G. Cochran and his wife Anna were led there via the Oregon Trail by their adopted son, George Washington, a free African-American. The family feared Washington would be forced into slavery if they stayed in Missouri after the passage of the Compromise of 1850. Cochran filed a donation land claim near the Borst Home in 1852 and was able to sell his claim to Washington for $6,000 because unlike the neighbori ...

Gundersen turned to Neil Young’s “Tonight’s the Night” for inspiration: “There’s this real ragged edge to that eil Young album like everything’s going to fall apart... I wouldn’t say my record is anywhere near as extreme as that, but we wanted to capture a sense of uncertainty – and have this sonic, raw edge to it.” According to Gunderson, everything was written on either an acoustic guitar or a piano, then taken into the studio to arrange and add instrumentation. It was recorded by Daniel Mendez (who has previously worked with Lit, Dashboard Confessional, Duran Duran, Heart, and Train) and mastered by Ed Brooks in just under a week in Dallas. It was released on August 6, 2011. The 7-track EP features Noah's sister, Abby Gundersen, who plays violin and sings vocal harmonies on several tracks. Folk Music
Folk music is a music genre that includes traditional folk music and the contemporary genre that evolved from the former during the 20th-century folk revival. Some types of folk music may be called world music. Traditional folk music has been defined in several ways: as music transmitted orally, music with unknown composers, music that is played on traditional instruments, music about cultural or national identity, music that changes between generations (folk process), music associated with a people's folklore, or music performed by custom over a long period of time. It has been contrasted with commercial and classical styles. The term originated in the 19th century, but folk music extends beyond that. Starting in the mid-20th century, a new form of popular folk music evolved from traditional folk music. This process and period is called the (second) folk revival and reached a zenith in the 1960s. This form of music is sometimes called contemporary folk music or folk rev ...

Fearful Bones
''Fearful Bones'' is the first album by The Courage, formerly known as Noah Gundersen & the Courage. The album was recorded in a barn in Sisters, Oregon, by Matt Lee, who mixed and produced the album, in summer 2010. It was released at the band's performance in the Crocodile Cafe in Oregon that September which started their promotional tour of the West Coast. ''Fearful Bones'' is seen as a turning point in the history of The Courage. Although it is the band's first album under their current name, the group has been playing as a back-up band for Noah Gundersen since 2007, who leads the group as the singer-songwriter. Gundersen dropped his name from the title after deciding to have the entire band more incorporated in the music and to move away from more folk-oriented music, saying, "I love the sound of a band more than a solo performer. You can only have so many options as a solo performer and I’m not a big fan of loop pedals." Since then, each member has played a more signifi ...

Saints & Liars
''Saints & Liars'' is the second EP by Noah Gundersen. The name of the EP comes from the track, "Middle of June", in the line "All the saints and the liars sitting by the fire/ what will happen to us now?" It was recorded in the fall of 2009 with Karli Fairbanks. Several of the songs including "Caroline", "Middle of June", and "Oh, Death" appeared on Noah Gundersen's Myspace as early as September, but the album was released on October 9, 2009. The Courage held a release show the night that Saints & Liars came out to an overcrowded audience at The Q Cafe. Paige Richmond, a journalist for Seattle Weekly wrote a review three days later regarding the performance in a blog titled "Live review: Noah Gundersen Brings Q Cafe Crowd to Its Feet" praising the performance as well as the band's unity. After the release of the album, the Courage became more dormant as Abby pursued her college career and the majority of the band's shows were performed Noah, Ivan Gunderson, and Travis Ehrentrom ...

Folk Rock
Folk rock is a hybrid music genre that combines the elements of folk and rock music, which arose in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom in the mid-1960s. In the U.S., folk rock emerged from the folk music revival. Performers such as Bob Dylan and the Byrds—several of whose members had earlier played in folk ensembles—attempted to blend the sounds of rock with their pre-existing folk repertoire, adopting the use of electric instrumentation and drums in a way previously discouraged in the U.S. folk community. The term "folk rock" was initially used in the U.S. music press in June 1965 to describe the Byrds' music. The commercial success of the Byrds' cover version of Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" and their debut album of the same name, along with Dylan's own recordings with rock instrumentation—on the albums ''Bringing It All Back Home'' (1965), ''Highway 61 Revisited'' (1965), and '' Blonde on Blonde'' (1966)—encouraged other folk acts, such as Simon & Ga ...
