The Corowa Free Press
''The Corowa Free Press'' was a weekly English language newspaper published in Corowa, New South Wales, Australia, between 1875 and 1928. History ''The Corowa Free Press'' was first launched by James Crauford Leslie and John William Hutchinson Wyse on 8 October 1875. James Crauford Leslie (1848-1907) was born in Scotland and emigrated to Melbourne, Australia with his family in 1854. In 1874 after being decorated for his involvement in the Maori Wars, he moved to Wahgunyah, Victoria to manage ''The Chronicle'' which served the cross-border towns of Wahgunyah and Corowa in New South Wales. After ''The Chronicle'' folded in September 1875, Leslie crossed the border to set up The Corowa Free Press. Wyse left the paper in 1880 and Leslie was the sole proprietor until his death on 20 February 1907. Corowa
Corowa is a town in the state of New South Wales in Australia. It is on the bank of the Murray River, the border between New South Wales and Victoria, opposite the Victorian town of Wahgunyah. It is the largest town in the Federation Council and was the administrative centre of the former Corowa Shire. The name could have derived from an Aboriginal word referring to the curra pine which yielded gum used by Aboriginal people to fasten the heads of spears to the shafts. Another translation is "rocky river". There are two bridges over the Murray to Wahgunyah in Victoria: the heritage-listed John Foord Bridge and the Federation Bridge (opened on 2 April 2005). The town in conjunction with nearby town Rutherglen has an Australian Rules football team ( Corowa-Rutherglen) competing in the Ovens & Murray Football League. Wahgunyah
Wahgunyah is a town in northeastern Victoria, Australia. The town is on the southern bank of the Murray River, opposite Corowa, New South Wales, in the Shire of Indigo. Wahgunyah is north east of the state capital, Melbourne and west of Albury/Wodonga. At the , Wahgunyah had a population of 1,098. The name is believed to be an aboriginal phrase meaning the resting place of crows. History The Wahgunyah cattle run was leased by John Foord and John Crisp in 1841. The township was established by Foord in 1856 and became important before the arrival of the railway in 1879 as the furthest upstream port on the Murray. The Post Office opened on 1 July 1858 and a school opened the same year. ''The Corowa Chronicle'' was an English language newspaper published in Corowa, New South Wales, Australia from 1905 to 1928. History The paper began on 7 October 1905 and was published by Albert John Esau until it ceased as a paper in its own right in 1928, when it was absorbed by The Corowa Free Press. The paper circulated throughout the Murray district of New South Wales and the north-eastern district of Victoria.
