The Conspiracy Of Silence
''The Conspiracy of Silence'' is a 1995 television documentary that outlines the problem of domestic violence in the United States, and describes some solutions. The title refers to an unspoken pact in an abusive relationship, in which the abuser expects the victim never to disclose the abuse, and the abused complies in the hope of avoiding further violence. The documentary is presented by Kathleen Turner, with appearances by Denise Brown (sister of Nicole Brown Simpson), Southampton judge Deborah Kooperstein, and others. Neal Marshad and Donna Olson, who co-wrote and co-directed the film, sought to show that domestic violence is not limited to one culture or social class, and that there is no standard profile for an abuser or an abused person. To this end, they focus on The Retreat, a women's shelter in affluent East Hampton, New York that helps battered women and their children obtain safe shelter and counselling. Neal Marshad (born April 25, 1952) is an American film and television producer, director, cinematographer, advertising executive, internet strategist, and designer. Personal life Marshad was born on April 25, 1952, in Peekskill, New York, the son of Ruth Marshad and Look (American magazine) art director and graphic designer Jack Marshad. Marshad grew up in Croton-on-Hudson, New York and since 1975 Marshad resides in Tribeca in Lower Manhattan, New York City. Starting in 1971, Marshad attended New York University, Tisch School of the Arts for Film and TV, with mentorship by his professor George C. Stoney who taught documentary filmmaking. Marshad's classmates included Barry Sonnenfeld, Amy Heckerling, Susan Seidelman, Martin Brest, Mitchell Block and Leonard Maltin. Duluth Model
The Duluth Model (also known as Domestic Abuse Intervention Project or DAIP or Pence's model) is a program developed to reduce domestic violence against women. It is named after Duluth, Minnesota, the city where it was developed. The program was largely founded by feminist Ellen Pence. , the Duluth Model is the most common batterer intervention program used in the United States. Critics argue that the method can be ineffective as it was developed without minority communities in mind and can fail to address root psychological or emotional causes of abuse, in addition to completely neglecting male victims and female perpetrators of abuse.
