''The Collection'' is a compilation album from Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan. It was released in the United Kingdom (Castle Communications CCSCD 276) in December 1990 and in the United States on 1 July 1992. History In 1990, Castle Communications released a Donovan compilation that spanned both his 1965 Pye Records recordings and his subsequent work for Epic Records. Donovan
Donovan Phillips Leitch (born 10 May 1946), known mononymously as Donovan, is a Scottish musician, songwriter, and record producer. He developed an eclectic and distinctive style that blended folk, jazz, pop, psychedelic rock and world music (notably calypso). He has lived in Scotland, Hertfordshire (England), London, California, and—since at least 2008—in County Cork, Ireland, with his family. Emerging from the British folk scene, Donovan reached fame in the United Kingdom in early 1965 with live performances on the pop TV series ''Ready Steady Go!''. Having signed with Pye Records in 1965, he recorded singles and two albums in the folk vein for Hickory Records, after which he signed to CBS/Epic in the US—the first signing by the company's new vice-president Clive Davis—and became more successful internationally. Castle Communications, also known as Castle Music, was a British independent record label and home video distributor founded in 1983 by Terry Shand, Cliff Dane, and Jon Beecher. Its video imprint was called Castle Vision. The label's production ceased in 2007, and its remaining rights are now chiefly vested in BMG Rights Management. Castle also operated a subsidiary label, Essential Records. Mickie Most
Michael Peter Hayes (20 June 1938 – 30 May 2003), known as Mickie Most, was an English record producer behind scores of hit singles for acts such as the Animals, Herman's Hermits, the Nashville Teens, Donovan, Lulu, Suzi Quatro, Hot Chocolate, Arrows, Racey, and the Jeff Beck Group, often issued on his own RAK Records label. Biography Early career Most was born as Michael Peter Hayes in Aldershot, Hampshire, England. The son of a regimental sergeant-major, he moved with his parents to Harrow, Middlesex in 1951. He was influenced by skiffle and early rock and roll in his youth. ''Rising'' is the third live album, and twentieth album overall, from British singer-songwriter Donovan. It was released on Permanent Records in 1990 (LP and CD). The live versions of Donovan's hits guaranteed that ''Rising'' would receive a release in both the United States and United Kingdom. ''Rising'' was retitled ''The Classics Live'' in the United States, ''25 Years in Concert'' in Europe and ''Atlantis'' in the UK for marketing reasons. Since the release of ''Rising'', there have been many reissues of the songs from the album under many different titles. ''Rising'' was supposedly recorded sporadically from 1982 through 1986 at various live concerts during different world tours. History In the early 1990s, audio engineer Steve Hoffman digitally remixed and remastered ten songs from the original master tapes of Donovan's 1965 Pye Records recordings. The songs were released as a compilation album entitled ''Colours'', but bore no resemblance to the previous albums of the same title. Pye Records was a British record label. Its best known artists were Lonnie Donegan (1956–1969), Petula Clark (1957–1971), the Searchers (1963–1967), the Kinks (1964–1971), Sandie Shaw (1964–1971), Status Quo (1968–1971) and Brotherhood of Man (1975–1979). "Catch the Wind" is a song written and recorded by Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan. Pye Records released "Catch the Wind" backed with "Why Do You Treat Me Like You Do?" as Donovan's debut release (Pye 7N.15801) in the United Kingdom on 28 February 1965. The single reached No. 4 in the United Kingdom singles chart. Hickory Records released the single in the United States in April 1965 (Hickory 45-1309), where it reached No. 23 in the United States Billboard Hot 100. '' Cash Box'' described it as a "medium-paced, folk-styled low-down bluesey romancer," with a Bob Dylan-like vocal. In May 1965, Pye Records released a different version of "Catch the Wind" on Donovan's debut LP record album What's Bin Did and What's Bin Hid (NPL.18117).
