''The Collection'' is a compilation album by Irish musical group Clannad, released in 1986 by K-tel International Ltd. It consists of their greatest hits dating back to 1972, with the tracks featuring a mix between pop rock influenced songwriting done by the band in addition to traditional folk music. The album saw a 1987 release on compact disc, which include a comment on the back cover by Irish journalist Tommie Gorman stating: "freed at least by recognition, their creative instincts have found a new strength." Clannad (musical Group)
Clannad () is an Irish band formed in 1970 in Gweedore, County Donegal by siblings Ciarán, Pól, and Moya Brennan and their twin uncles Noel and Pádraig Duggan. They have adopted various musical styles throughout their history, including folk, folk rock, traditional Irish, Celtic and new-age music, often incorporating elements of smooth jazz and Gregorian chant. Initially known as ''Clann as Dobhar'', they shortened their name to Clannad in 1973 after winning the Letterkenny Folk Festival with the song "Liza". By 1979, they had released three albums and completed a successful US tour. From 1980 to 1982, they operated as a six-piece with their sister/niece Enya Brennan on additional keyboards and vocals, before she left the group to pursue a solo career. "Down by the Salley Gardens" (''Irish: Gort na Saileán'') is a poem by William Butler Yeats published in ''The Wanderings of Oisin and Other Poems'' in 1889. History Yeats indicated in a note that it was "an attempt to reconstruct an old song from three lines imperfectly remembered by an old peasant woman in the village of Ballisodare, Sligo, who often sings them to herself." The "old song" may have been the ballad ''The Rambling Boys of Pleasure'' which contains the following verse: :"Down by yon flowery garden my love and I we first did meet. :I took her in my arms and to her I gave kisses sweet :She bade me take life easy just as the leaves fall from the tree. :But I being young and foolish, with my darling did not agree." "Theme from ''Harry's Game''" is a 1982 song by Clannad commissioned as the theme for '' Harry's Game'', a Yorkshire Television miniseries adapted from a 1975 novel set in The Troubles in Northern Ireland. It was released as a single in October 1982 and became a surprise hit, reaching number 5 in the UK Singles Chart the following month and number 2 in the Irish Singles Chart. Composition The song was written "in a couple of hours", credited to Pól and Ciarán Brennan. Gerald Seymour, author of ''Harry's Game'', originally wanted to use "Mhorag 's Na Horo Gheallaidh", a Scottish Gaelic song from Clannad's album '' Fuaim'', but Clannad felt Irish-language lyrics would be more appropriate. Tommie Gorman
Tommie Gorman (born 1956) is a retired Irish journalist. He worked for RTÉ News and Current Affairs from 1980 to 2021. He was the former Northern Ireland editor for RTÉ. He is known for his personal interviews with figures such as Seán Quinn, Gerry Adams and Roy Keane, the latter following the 2002 Saipan incident. He retired in April 2021. Career He began his journalistic work with the ''Western People'' newspaper in County Mayo, where he worked for journalist John Healy. He joined RTÉ in 1980 and became North-West correspondent. In 1989, he moved to Brussels to become Europe Editor, and was appointed Northern Ireland Editor in 2001.
