The Cloud (painting)
''The Cloud'' () is an oil painting by the Norwegian artist Odd Nerdrum, from 1985. It depicts a nude man in a leather helmet, looking out over a landscape with a compact dark cloud in the sky. It is held in a private collection. In 2005 the painting was selected by the newspaper ''Morgenbladet'' as one of Norway's twelve most important artworks from the period 1945–2005. A version of the painting was sold for 1.9 million Norwegian kroner in 2008, which was the new record for a Nerdrum painting. Odd Nerdrum
Odd Nerdrum (born 8 April 1944) is a Norwegian figurative painter, born in Sweden, and considered to be one of the greatest living classical figurative painters. His work is held by museums worldwide. Themes and style in Nerdrum's work reference anecdote and narrative. Primary influences by the painters Rembrandt and Caravaggio help place his work in direct conflict with the abstraction and conceptual art considered acceptable in much of Norway. Nerdrum creates six to eight paintings a year. They include still life paintings of small, everyday objects (like bricks), portraits and self-portraits, and large paintings allegorical and apocalyptic in nature. The figures in Nerdrum's paintings are often dressed as if from another time and place. Nerdrum was born in Helsingborg, Sweden, because his parents were resistance fighters who had fled German-occupied Norway during World War II. Oil Painting
Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments with a medium of drying oil as the binder. It has been the most common technique for artistic painting on wood panel or canvas for several centuries, spreading from Europe to the rest of the world. The advantages of oil for painting images include "greater flexibility, richer and denser colour, the use of layers, and a wider range from light to dark". But the process is slower, especially when one layer of paint needs to be allowed to dry before another is applied. The oldest known oil paintings were created by Buddhist artists in Afghanistan and date back to the 7th century AD. The technique of binding pigments in oil was later brought to Europe in the 15th century, about 900 years later. ''Morgenbladet'' is a Norwegian weekly, newspaper, covering politics, culture and science. History ''Morgenbladet'' was founded in 1819 by the book printer Niels Wulfsberg. The paper is the country's first daily newspaper; however, Adresseavisen was founded earlier. For a long time, ''Morgenbladet'' was also the country's top-ranking newspaper by circulation. Adolf Bredo Stabell, chief editor from 1831 to 1857, made ''Morgenbladet'' an important force of opposition, both in politics and literature. Among its writers during this period was the author Henrik Wergeland. The leadership of Christian Friele, from 1857 to 1893, turned ''Morgenbladet'' into the leading conservative news outlet in Norway. ''Nettavisen'' is a Norwegian online newspaper, launched in 1996 as the first online-only newspaper in Norway. The current editor is Gunnar Stavrum. As of 2015 it was one of Norway's most popular news websites. History The online newspaper (its literal name in Norwegian) was launched on 1 November 1996, and was founded by Odd Harald Hauge, Stig Eide Sivertsen and Knut Ivar Skeid. The krone (, abbreviation: kr (also NKr for distinction); code: NOK), plural ''kroner'', is currency of the Kingdom of Norway (including Svalbard). ''Dawn'' is an oil on canvas painting by the Norwegian artist Odd Nerdrum, painted in 1989. It is held in a private collection. Description The painting depicts four identical men in a grey rocky landscape. The men are seen from the side as they sit on the ground, largely naked, with skull caps and leather wrapped around their shoulders; they face the sky above them with closed eyes and open mouths. Each of the men has a staff lying in the ground, near them. It is one of Nerdrum's largest paintings and one he has said he is "very pleased with". History ''Dawn'' was shown at Høstutstillingen in 1989. The rock musician David Bowie bought it at the Raab Gallery in Berlin in the autumn of 1990.
