The Closer You Get (Alabama Song)
"The Closer You Get" is a song recorded by American country music band Exile. It was released in 1981. About the song "The Closer You Get" was written in 1980 by J.P. Pennington and Mark Gray, members of Exile. However, the song was not immediately recorded by Alabama. Two earlier versions were released as singles – the first by Exile (which failed to gain much attention) and singer Don King, whose version reached No. 27 on the ''Billboard'' Hot Country Singles chart in October 1981. In addition, Rita Coolidge recorded the song for her 1981 album, ''Heartbreak Radio'', and released her version as a single. Alabama's version differed substantially from King's acoustic version. According to country music writer Tom Roland, the song featured "distorted guitars, a more elaborate arrangement and an altered vocal sound." Exile (American Band)
Exile is an American band originally formed in 1963. In the 1970s, they were known as a rock band that had a major hit single with "Kiss You All Over" in 1978. After several lineup changes, the band was re-launched as a country act that achieved additional success in the 1980s and '90s. J.P. Pennington is the only current member of the band remaining from its early days. Career Early years The origins of Exile were with a high school band in Richmond, Kentucky, called the Fascinations, which featured singer Jimmy Stokley. In 1963, the Fascinations merged with another local band and became Jimmy Stokley and the Exiles, with singer/guitarist J.P. Pennington, then age 14, joining a short time later. They toured regionally with the Dick Clark Caravan of Stars in 1965. Their name was later shortened to The Exiles, apparently to show support for Cuban refugees. ''For the Record: 41 Number One Hits'' is a two-disc, 44-track greatest hits package released by the American country music band Alabama. The album chronicles the biggest hits from Alabama released from 1980 to 1998. The lineup includes all 33 of their ''Billboard magazine'' Hot Country Singles & Tracks No. 1 singles, as well as other songs which reached number one on the former '' Radio & Records'' (now ''Mediabase'') charts; each of the non-''Billboard'' No. 1 hits made the top 5 on that chart. Three new tracks are also included. Of these, "How Do You Fall in Love" reached No. 2 on the ''Billboard'' Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart in late 1998. The follow-up single, "Keepin' Up", reached the Top 20 in early 1999, while "Five O'Clock 500" remained an album cut as it was not released as a single.
