''The City Gone Wild'' (1927) is a silent gangster film produced by Famous Players-Lasky and distributed by Paramount Pictures. The film starred Louise Brooks and was directed by James Cruze, and is now a lost film.''The American Film Institute Catalog Feature Films: 1921-30'' by The American Film Institute, c.1971 The last known copy of this film was nearly saved in the late 1960s by preservationist David Shepard for deposit at AFI. Paramount had also contracted with junk men to haul off their old rusting reels with the film still wound on. Shepard arrived at the studio just as junkmen carted the film off for disposal. James Cruze
James Cruze (born James Cruze Bosen; March 27, 1884 – August 3, 1942) was a silent film actor and film director. Early years Cruze's middle name came from the battle of Vera Cruz. He was raised in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but did not practice the religion after his teenage years. Very little is certain about his childhood and teen years because he told a different story at every interview he granted. Career Cruze acted in, directed and or produced over 100 films mainly during the silent film era. His first known acting job was at Lubin Manufacturing Company in 1910. He started at Thanhouser Company in 1911 with ''She'' (1911) which is where the majority of his body of work was produced, much of it as the leading man. After leaving Thanhouser in 1916, he worked for several other companies as director and producer, primarily for Paramount Pictures, from 1918 to 1938. Charles Hill Mailes
Charles Hill Mailes (25 May 1870 – 17 February 1937) was a Canadian actor of the silent era. Biography Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1870, Mailes appeared in 290 films between 1909 and 1935. He married the actress Claire McDowell in 1906 and the happy couple appeared in numerous silent films together including '' The Mark of Zorro'' (1920). They had two sons, Robert and Eugene. He died in Los Angeles, California, in 1937.
