The Checkered Flag (1926 Film)
''The Checkered Flag'' is a 1926 American silent drama film directed by John G. Adolfi and starring Elaine Hammerstein, Wallace MacDonald, and Lionel Belmore. The title refers to the automobile racing flag used to denote that the race is finished Plot As described in a film magazine review, Jack Reese, superintendent at Corbin Motors, is in love with Rita Corbin. His rival is managing director Ray Barton, who succeeds in having Jack fired. Jack and his pal Marcel Dejeans have invented a new carburetor, which they believe will work wonders in making a car win a race. The model carburetor is stolen but recovered by the chums. On the day of the big race, foul play prevents Jack and Marcel from appearing at the racetrack in time to compete. Rita shows her plunk by taking her lovers place and driving the car to victory. Carburetor
A carburetor (also spelled carburettor) is a device used by an internal combustion engine to control and mix air and fuel entering the engine. The primary method of adding fuel to the intake air is through the venturi tube in the main metering circuit, however various other components are also used to provide extra fuel or air in specific circumstances. Since the 1990s, carburetors have been largely replaced by fuel injection for cars and trucks, however carburetors are still used by some small engines (e.g. lawnmowers, generators and concrete mixers) and motorcycles. Diesel engines have always used fuel injection instead of carburetors. Peggy O'Neil
Margaret O'Neil (16 June 1898 in – 7 January 1960) was an Irish-American vaudeville actress. Childhood Her family migrated at the turn of the century from Ireland to Canada, soon moving to Rochester, New York. It is unclear whether Peggy was born there or in Ireland.("I am Irish – impulse rather than reason guided me"). O'Neil attended a Loreto convent school. At the age of nine, her father Frederick died in a train wreck, her mother Mary Buckley O'Neill died three years later. Peggy came under the care of local relatives. An uncle named Charlie Zimmerman, a music director, encouraged her artistic talent and took to theater choirs. Robert Howard Ober (May 10, 1881 – December 7, 1950) was an American stage and silent-screen actor. Early life Robert Howard Ober was born on May 10, 1881, in Bunker Hill, Illinois, to parents Robert Howard Ober Sr. and Joella W. Ober (née Davis). He attended Divoll grade school in St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis. Career Ober started his theater career in St. Louis, Missouri at the Century Theatre.
