Charlatan
A charlatan (also called a swindler or mountebank) is a person practicing quackery or a similar confidence trick in order to obtain money, power, fame, or other advantages through pretense or deception. Synonyms for ''charlatan'' include '' shyster'', ''quack'', or ''faker''. ''Quack'' is a reference to '' quackery'' or the practice of dubious medicine, including the sale of snake oil, or a person who does not have medical training who purports to provide medical services. Etymology The word comes from French '','' a seller of medicines who might advertise his presence with music and an outdoor stage show. Šarlatán
''Šarlatán'' (English: ''The Charlatan''), Op. 14, is a tragicomic opera in three acts (seven scenes) by Pavel Haas to his own Czech libretto, after a 1929 German-language novel, ''Doktor Eisenbart'', by Josef Winckler (1881–1966), which was based on the life of the travelling surgeon Johann Andreas Eisenbarth. Performance history The opera was composed between 1934 and 1937. Haas completed his work on the libretto on 1 July 1934. Later, he was forced to conceal his inspiration, because a collaboration between a German writer and a Jewish composer was forbidden by Nuremberg Laws. The composer removed from the libretto any association with the original German background and he changed the name of the main character (Eisenbart) to the Czech equivalent, Pustrpalk. A six-movement Suite (Op. 14) based on themes from the opera, intended to publicise the premiere, was broadcast by the Brno Radio Orchestra on 14 June, 1937. John R
John R. (born John Richbourg, August 20, 1910 - February 15, 1986) was an American radio disc jockey who attained fame in the 1950s and 1960s for playing rhythm and blues music on Nashville radio station WLAC. He was also a notable record producer and artist manager. Richbourg was arguably the most popular and charismatic of the four announcers at WLAC who showcased popular African-American music in nightly programs from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. (The other three were Gene Nobles, Herman Grizzard, and Bill "Hoss" Allen.) Later rock music disc jockeys, such as Alan Freed and Wolfman Jack, mimicked Richbourg's practice of using speech that simulated African-American street language of the mid-twentieth century. Richbourg's highly stylized approach to on-air presentation of both music and advertising earned him popularity, but it also created identity confusion. Derek Walcott
Sir Derek Alton Walcott (23 January 1930 – 17 March 2017) was a Saint Lucian poet and playwright. He received the 1992 Nobel Prize in Literature. Sydney Horler
Sydney Horler (18 July 1888 – 27 October 1954) was a prolific British novelist specialising in thrillers. He was born in Leytonstone, Essex, and educated at Redcliffe School and Colston School in Bristol. His first job was with ''Western Daily Press'' and Allied Newspapers in Bristol started in 1905. This lasted until 1911 when he left to become a special writer on the staff of Edward Hulton and Co. in Manchester. He moved to London to work on the '' Daily Mail'' and ''Daily Citizen'' in Fleet Street, although he also worked in the propaganda section of Air Intelligence towards the end of the First World War. When it ended he joined the editorial staff of George Newnes Ltd as a sub editor of the '' John O'London's Weekly''. He didn't see eye to eye with the editor and after a big row in 1919 his employment was terminated. He decided to become a full-time writer. Robert Williams Buchanan
Robert Williams Buchanan (18 August 1841 – 10 June 1901) was a Scottish poet, novelist and dramatist. Early life and education He was the son of Robert Buchanan (1813–1866), Owenite lecturer and journalist, and was born at Caverswall, Staffordshire, England. Buchanan senior, a native of Ayr, Scotland, lived for some years in Manchester, then moved to Glasgow, where Buchanan junior was educated, at the high school and the university, one of his fellow-students being the poet David Gray. His essay on Gray, originally published in the ''Cornhill Magazine'', tells the story of their close friendship, and of their journey to London in 1860 in search of fame. His friend, Scottish-American poet James Mackintosh Kennedy, wrote in ''Scottish and American Poems'': "Robert Buchanan, the well-known British poet and most genial and variously gifted man, visited America in 1884-85." ''The Loudest Engine'' is the third studio album of London-based Australian indie rock band Howling Bells. The album was released through Cooking Vinyl on 9 September 2011 to mostly positive reviews. It was produced by Mark Stoermer and recorded at Battle Born Studios, in Las Vegas from September to October 2010. Howling Bells began writing for ''The Loudest Engine'' more than two years preceding its release while they supported Coldplay on the Viva la Vida Tour. The band sought to capture more closely the essence of its debut album, ''Howling Bells'', and retract from its technically inclined predecessor, '' Radio Wars''. Vocalist and rhythm guitarist Juanita Stein was credited for writing most of the lyrical content on ''The Loudest Engine''. The band moved on from all five record labels it was signed to and established an exclusive partnership with Cooking Vinyl. The 12-track album was recorded in Los Angeles in Cameron Webb's recording studio and released on 16 August 2011 by Victory Records. ''The Charlatans'' is the fourth album by the British rock band the Charlatans, released on 28 August 1995 through Beggars Banquet Records. Following a holiday, vocalist Tim Burgess and guitarist Mark Collins wrote material for their next album at Burgess' place in Chalk Farm. The band then absconded to Monnow Valley Studio in Rockfield, Monmouthshire, Wales with producer Steve Hillage. After preparing several mixes of the album, none of which they liked, Hillage was fired and engineer Dave Charles was brought in. Further recording was then done at the nearby Rockfield Studios. "Crashin' In" was released as the album's lead single in December 1994. Following a tour of the United Kingdom in April 1995, "Just Lookin" and "Bullet Comes" were released as a double A-side single in May 1995. The Charlatans are an English rock band formed in West Midlands, England in 1988. The current line-up comprises lead vocalist Tim Burgess, guitarist Mark Collins, bassist Martin Blunt and keyboardist Tony Rogers. All the band's thirteen studio albums have charted in the top 40 of the UK Albums Chart, three of them being number ones.
