The Candyskins
The Candyskins were an English rock band formed in 1989 in Oxford, England. Though early members of the 'Oxford Scene', they enjoyed limited commercial success compared to their contemporaries Radiohead and Supergrass. They were considered by the British music press as one of the seminal early bands of the Britpop era. The band recorded four studio albums over a period of eight years before breaking up in 1998 and reuniting in 2009. History The band owes its origins to Mark and Nick Cope, Nick Burton and John Halliday all living in the same village, Islip, Oxfordshire, and attending the same local secondary school (Gosford Hill School) between around 1974 and 1980. Truck Festival
Truck Festival is an annual independent music festival in Oxfordshire, England. It was started in 1998 by the Bennett family (including the brothers Robin and Joe of the band Goldrush), who decided that mainstream festivals such as Glastonbury had become too commercial and predictable, however since 2012 it was sold off and is now more commercial. It is held in July at Hill Farm in Steventon, which lies between Abingdon, Didcot and Wantage. The festival also gave birth to the Truck Records label in 1999. The main stage was originally constructed from three large flatbed trucks, and a common misperception is that this is where the name of the festival comes from. In the music industry, the Top 40 is the current, 40 most-popular songs in a particular genre. It is the best-selling or most frequently broadcast popular music. Record charts have traditionally consisted of a total of 40 songs. "Top 40" or " contemporary hit radio" is also a radio format. Alternative Airplay (formerly known as Modern Rock Tracks (1988–2009) and Alternative Songs (2009–2020)) is a music chart in the United States that has appeared in ''Billboard'' magazine since September 10, 1988. It ranks the 40 most-played songs on alternative and modern rock radio stations. Introduced as Modern Rock Tracks, the chart served as a companion to the Mainstream Rock chart (then called Album Rock Tracks), and its creation was prompted by the explosion of alternative music on American radio in the late 1980s. During the first several years of the chart, it regularly featured music that did not receive commercial radio airplay anywhere but on a few modern rock and college rock radio stations. It is the band's first release after being dropped by Geffen Records and signing with the indie label, Ultimate, and is their last album with original bassist Karl Shale. The album boasts three singles that all cracked the UK Singles Chart: "Mrs. Hoover", "Hang Myself on You", and the band's only Top 40 hit "Monday Morning". ''Fun?'' is the second album from the British rock band the Candyskins. It contains their hit single "Wembley". It is the band's last release on a major label, being dropped by Geffen following two years of inactivity after its release. The disagreement with the label led to the arrest of Nick and Mark Cope, the band's lead singer and rhythm guitarist, for spray painting 'No Fun' on the wall of their former employer. Reception Dave Thompson wrote in his book ''Alternative Rock'' that the band with this release "emphasize the rock'n'pop with bigger sound, riddled with soaring leads, rougher riffs, ndsome genuinely meaty power chords". Tom Demalon of AllMusic says the "lyrics, mainly dealing with failed relationships, contrast the sweetness and lightweight feel of the music" and that the tracks highlight "the band's musical diversity". Space I'm In
''Space I'm In'' is the debut album from the British rock band The Candyskins. It contains their hit single "Submarine Song" and the title track was an MTV favourite. A video was also made for their cover of the Buffalo Springfield song For What It's Worth, directed by Samuel Bayer, whose video for Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana had recently entered heavy rotation on MTV. The recording of the album was financed by Geffen Records, although the first single release was under the Long Beach label. The band were signed to Geffen by A&R man Tom Zutaut. Reception Dave Thompson wrote in his book ''Alternative Rock'' that the band "actually came up with something new" calling the music "sparkling pop rock tinged with psychedelia round the edges" with "thoughtful lyrics". The Official Albums Chart is a list of albums ranked by physical and digital sales and (from March 2015) audio streaming in the United Kingdom. It was published for the first time on 22 July 1956 and is compiled every week by the Official Charts Company (OCC) on Fridays (previously Sundays). It is broadcast on BBC Radio 1 (top 5) and found on the OCC website as a Top 100 or on UKChartsPlus as a Top 200, with positions continuing until all sales have been tracked in data only available to industry insiders. However, even though number 100 was classed as a hit album (as in the case of The Guinness Book of British Hit Albums) in the 1980s until January 1989, since the compilations were removed this definition was changed to Top 75 with follow-up books such as The Virgin Book of British Hit Albums book only including this data. Nick Cope (born 8 December) is an English musician running regular music sessions in Oxfordshire for young children and their families. The O2 Academy Oxford is a night club and live music venue in Oxford, England, operated by Academy Music Group. Its previous names include the Coop Hall, the Oxford Venue, the Zodiac and the Carling Academy Oxford. History Oxford Co-operative Society (1907–1990) The red brick building at 190–196 Cowley Road in southeast Oxford was designed by Harry Wilkinson Moore and built in 1907 for the Oxford Co-operative Society.
