Rudall Hayward
Rudall Charles Victor Hayward (4 July 1900 – 29 May 1974) was a pioneer New Zealand filmmaker from the 1920s to the 1970s, who directed seven feature films and numerous others. Biography Hayward was born in Wolverhampton, England, and died in Dunedin while promoting his last film. He was the son of Rudall and Adelina Hayward, who came to New Zealand in 1905. With Henry John Hayward (1866–1945) Rudall senior’s brother, his parents were involved with entertainment and silent cinema in New Zealand, in West’s Pictures and The Brescians. Rudall (junior) was educated at Wanganui Collegiate School from 1916 to 1917 and the Waihi School of Mines. He worked in Australia c1920 under Raymond Longford (who in 1915-16 was filming in New Zealand), on some of Longford's films: ''The Sentimental Bloke'', ''On Our Selection'', and '' Rudd’s New Selection''. Dale Austen
Dale Austen, born Beatrix Dale Austen (born 12 September 1910, date of death unknown), was a New Zealand actress who had a brief acting career in films in the late 1920s and the 1930s. She was born in Dunedin, New Zealand on 12 September 1910. She was an accomplished athlete in yachting, swimming, tennis, basketball, horse-riding and dancing. Her height, age 17, was five feet and four inches. At the age of 17 she entered a beauty contest organized by First National Pictures. On 14 July 1927 she defeated seven other girls to be crowned Miss Otago, garnering 4,447 votes out of a possible 10,664. This earned her a place in the Miss New Zealand contest. On 14 October 1927 she was crowned the second-ever winner of the title Miss New Zealand in Auckland. Hilda Hayward
Hilda Maud Hayward (née Moren, 26 September 1898 – 3 January 1970) was a pioneering New Zealand filmmaker. She is considered the country's first female camera operator. Early life Hayward was born in Takapuna, on the North Shore, Auckland, on 26 September 1898. Her father, Frank Percy Moren, was an engineer and her mother, Maud Mauren (née Green), was a music teacher. Hayward's father drowned when she was young, and she was raised by her mother and grandmother. Adult life Around 1922 Hayward met Rudall Hayward, a filmmaker, and they married at St Peter's Church, Takapuna, on 18 September 1923. Hayward learnt from her husband how to develop and edit film, and began to work with him on his projects. The couple set up home in Hayward's mother's house in Takapuna and built a darkroom there to work from.
