''The Broken Violin'' is an American film that was released in 1923. It was directed by John Francis Dillon. It was produced by Atlantic Features and distributed by Arrow Film Corporation It is a melodrama. A 1923 publication described the film as "heart interest laid on thick." Plot ''Variety'' wrote, "The story is of an imposter endeavoring to secure the millions rightfully belonging to another. His ruse works for a time, but the rightful heir finally comes into his own and incidentally wins the girl which the other hand had also attempted to secure". Reception A review in ''Variety'' reads, "These long drawn-out melodramas are pretty tough on summer-time audiences" and "Melodramatics are the stock in trade of this production, with the story bringing forth only old bits in this line to create interest. John Francis Dillon (director)
John Francis Dillon (July 13, 1884 – April 4, 1934) was an American film director and actor of the silent era. He directed 130 films between 1914 and 1934. He also appeared in 74 films between 1914 and 1931. He was born in New York, New York, was a brother of Robert A. Dillon, and died in Los Angeles, California from a heart attack. He was married to the actress Edith Hallor. ''The Broken Violin'' is an American silent film directed by Oscar Micheaux, released in 1928. The film is based on Micheaux's unpublished novel, ''House of Mystery''. It is about a beautiful African-American prodigy who plays violin. She overcomes her impoverished background and alcoholic father (who breaks her violin), in order to find success in music and love. Cast J. Homer Tutt, one of the Tutt Brothers, and Oscar Micheaux's wife Alice B. Russell starred in the film. Tutt, an accomplished vaudeville performer and producer with his brother, also had a lead role in Micheaux's films Birthright (1924 film), ''Birthright''; these were his only known feature film roles. Edward Roseman
Edward Roseman (May 14, 1875 – September 16, 1957), sometimes identified as Edward F. Roseman, was an American actor, who worked primarily during the silent film era. Biography The son of a pharmacist, Roseman was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, christened Ernest Frederick Roseman. His father died of tuberculosis when he was seven years old so Edward and his two siblings, Jenny May and Henry, were raised in Terre Haute by his mother, Mary Lucinda. As a young adult, Roseman worked on a railroad before succumbing to the lure of vaudeville and traveling theater stock companies, including the Margaret Bird Stock Company and those founded by playwrights Lincoln J. Carter and Wright Lorimer. Between 1913 and 1921, Roseman was a popular actor in silent films, appearing in about 50 motion pictures during that span. Gladden James (February 26, 1888 – August 28, 1948) was an American film actor. He appeared in more than 180 films between 1911 and 1946. He was born in Zanesville, Ohio and died in Hollywood, California, from leukemia. Family In 1914 he married Julia Nagl, a 1911 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Nebraska and later a Broadway actress who he appeared with in Officer 666, in Texas while on a picture taking assignment with the US government.
