Silent Film
A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience. René Plaissetty
René Plaissetty (1889–1955) was an American film director. Son of Achille Plaissetty, chemist and businessman and Corinne Bonnecaze, professor of singing, René Plaissetty was born on March 7, 1889, in Chicago. In 1907 he came to live in France and later married Yvonne Lacroix, the daughter of Parisian couturier Jeanne Margaine-Lacroix and a French figure skating champion in 1908, with two daughters, Jacqueline in 1909 and Micheline in 1911. With the help of other administrators he founded his production company Filma. In January 1920, leaving his factory to his assistant, he left for London where he returned to the studios with Mary Massart, who became his muse. ''The Broken Road'' is a 1907 novel of adventure and romance by A. E. W. Mason, set in India during the period of British rule. It first appeared in serial form in ''The Cornhill Magazine''. As a result of the book's publication, the British Government abolished a regulation that had prevented soldiers of the British Indian Army, no matter how valorous, from being eligible to receive the Victoria Cross. Plot During the period of British rule in India, the northern frontier region of Chiltistan had always been a potential flashpoint although the local tribes are kept in check by the Khan, a puppet ruler maintained in power by the British. To enhance Chiltistan's defensibility, the Government decides to construct a road across the territory with support from the Khan who sees opportunities for increased trade and personal profit. Robert English was a British actor born 2 December 1878 (though IBDB gives the year as 1874). Robert English was born in Cheltenham, Gloucester, England, UK. He served in the South African War and also in World War I. He held the D.S.O. and Croix de Guerre and retired as Lieutenant Colonel, which helped him play military roles in a number of films. He played rugby (he was six feet two inches) and was in the Gloucester County cricket team. In 1920 he started work in British silent films and later went on to talkies. He died on 18 August 1941 in London.
