The Braaid

The Braaid is an Iron Age roundhouse and two Norse long houses on this site represent its occupation until the 11th or 12th century AD in the parish of Marown in the Isle of Man. The site uniquely brings together buildings of Iron Age and Viking styles that were used together and survive down to the present. The site lies between Braaid hamlet and Mount Murray at which reference an area map can be viewed. The Iron Age is the final epoch of the three-age division of the prehistory and protohistory of humanity. It was preceded by the Stone Age (Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic) and the Bronze Age (Chalcolithic). The concept has been mostly applied to Iron Age Europe and the Ancient Near East, but also, by analogy, to other parts of the Old World. The duration of the Iron Age varies depending on the region under consideration. It is defined by archaeological convention. Roundhouse (dwelling)
A roundhouse is a type of house with a circular plan, usually with a conical roof. In the later part of the 20th century, modern designs of roundhouse eco-buildings were constructed with materials such as cob, cordwood or straw bale walls and reciprocal frame green roofs. Europe United Kingdom Roundhouses were the standard form of housing built in Britain from the Bronze Age throughout the Iron Age, and in some areas well into the Sub Roman period. The people built walls made of either stone or of wooden posts joined by wattle-and-daub panels, and topped with a conical thatched roof. These ranged in size from less than 5m in diameter to over 15m. The Atlantic roundhouse, Broch, and Wheelhouse styles were used in Scotland. Marown
Marown ( , rhymes with "gown"; gv, Marooney) is one of the seventeen historic parishes of the Isle of Man. It is the only landlocked parish on the Island. It is located in the centre of the island, in the sheading of Middle, though historically, from 1796 until 1986, it was in the sheading of Glenfaba. Settlements in the parish include Braaid, Crosby and Glen Vine. Local government For the purposes of local government, the whole of the historic parish forms a single parish district with Commissioners. Although Marown lies east of the watershed and is currently in the sheading of Middle, it is also grouped for various local government purposes with the west of the island: it falls under the aegis of the Peel and Western District Housing Committee, Western Traffic Management Group, Western Neighbourhood Policing etc. The Captain of the Parish (since 2001) is Charles Fargher MBE.
