The Black Godfather
''The Black Godfather'' is a 1974 American blaxploitation film written and directed by John Evans and starring Rod Perry, Don Chastain, Diane Sommerfield and Jimmy Witherspoon. The plot is about J.J. (Rod Perry), a rising star in the black crime scene, who is in the process of consolidating his power over the neighborhood. One of the only remaining obstacles is the white heroin cartel that is reluctant to abandon such a lucrative market. Tensions rise, and an explosive confrontation is the result. Plot The movie begins with an overview of a city skyline. J.J. (Rod Perry) and his friend are seen walking down a street; they stop and one of the men points to a house. They proceed to walk up the stairs that lead to the front door. As Tommy opens the door he pulls out a gun that jams on him. Blaxploitation Films
Blaxploitation is an ethnic subgenre of the exploitation film that emerged in the United States during the early 1970s. The term, a portmanteau of the words "black" and "exploitation", was coined in August 1972 by Junius Griffin, the president of the Beverly Hills-Hollywood NAACP branch. He claimed the genre was "proliferating offenses" to the black community in its perpetuation of stereotypical characters often involved in crime. The genre does rank among the first after the race films in the 1940s and 1960s in which black characters and communities are the protagonists and subjects of film and television, rather than sidekicks, antagonists or victims of brutality. The genre's inception coincides with the rethinking of race relations in the 1970s. Rod Perry (actor)
Roderick Maurice Perry (July 30, 1934 – December 17, 2020) was an American actor best known for his role as Sgt. David "Deacon" Kay in the 1970s TV series ''S.W.A.T.'' Perry also played leading roles in two blaxploitation movies in the mid-1970s: '' The Black Godfather'' (1974) and ''The Black Gestapo'' (1975). Other TV appearances include ''Barney Miller'', '' Good Times'', ''Babylon 5'', and the 1974 TV movies ''The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman'' and ''Trapped Beneath the Sea''. In the 2000s, Perry had a cameo role in the 2003 film version of ''S.W.A.T.'', playing the father of the character he portrayed three decades earlier in the TV series, played on this occasion by LL Cool J.
