''The Black Captain'' (Italian: ''Il capitano nero'') is a 1951 Italian historical adventure film directed by Giorgio Ansoldi and Alberto Pozzetti and starring Steve Barclay, Marina Berti and Paul Muller. The film's sets were designed by Alfredo Montori. It was shot at the Cinecittà studios in Rome during 1950 but released the following year. Cinecittà Studios (; Italian for Cinema City Studios), is a large film studio in Rome, Italy. With an area of 400,000 square metres (99 acres), it is the largest film studio in Europe, and is considered the hub of Italian cinema. The studios were constructed during the Fascist era as part of a plan to revive the Italian film industry. Franca Marzi (18 August 1926 – 6 March 1989) was an Italian film actress. She appeared in 80 films between 1943 and 1977. Life and career Born in Rome as Francesca Marsi, after working in the revue, Marzi made her film debut in her early twenties, in '' The Lovers'' (1946) by Giacomo Gentilomo. She was usually cast in roles of provocative women and femme fatales in films of sentimental or comic genre. Roberto Risso
Roberto Risso (22 November 1925 – 16 November 2010) was a Swiss-born Italian film actor. Life and career Born Pietro Roberto Strub in Geneva, Risso joined the cinema industry when he was still a university student of architecture, playing a minor role in Pietro Francisci's '' The Lion of Amalfi'' (1950). One year later he was chosen to play the seducer of Pier Angeli in '' Tomorrow Is Another Day'', and the success of the film allowed him to play similar roles in a large number of films, mainly romantic comedies. In 1953 Risso touched the peak of his career with the role of the shy Carabiniere Pietro Stelluti madly in love with Gina Lollobrigida in Luigi Comencini's ''Bread, Love and Dreams'', a role that he reprised in the film sequel ''Bread, Love and Jealousy''. Biography Born in Florence, Checchi appeared in over 150 films in his lengthy career, which spanned from 1934 to his death in 1974. Marisa Merlini (6 August 1923 – 27 July 2008) was an Italian character actress active in Italy's post-World War II cinema. Merlini appeared in over fifty films during her career, which spanned from World War II to 2005. In Luigi Comencini's 1953 film ''Pane, amore e fantasia'', she portrayed Annarella, a village midwife, who marries the local police marshal, played by Vittorio De Sica.
