The Bilders
Bilders (or Builders) is a New Zealand music group of varying lineups that produced a string of self-recorded 7-inch vinyl releases between 1980 and 1982 leading to Beatin Hearts, the first studio-album from fledgling New Zealand indie label, independent record label 'Flying Nun Records'. Known variously from pre-internet times as Die Bilder (German, for "The Pictures"), Bilderbergers, bilderine, Soluble Fish, and High Thirties Piano, their alternative band names reflected a playfulness that challenged priority branding. The band does not maintain a steady profile. Months or years may pass without a performance, however 2018 was a prolific year for remastering and re-releases, with many live performances. New material of the spoken word and improvisation show Expendable Animals, however, was not recorded, unless on iPhones. Christchurch ( ; mi, Ōtautahi) is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand and the seat of the Canterbury Region. Steve Braunias
Steven Carl Braunias (born 20 June 1960) is a New Zealand author, columnist, journalist and editor. He is the author of 11 books. Early life and family Braunias was born in New Zealand to an Austrian immigrant father and a New Zealand-born mother. He is the younger brother of artist Mark Braunias. He grew up in Mount Maunganui reading ''Shoot'' magazine, ''Roy of the Rovers'' and ''Tiger and Scorcher'' comic books. These would come to influence his later columns through the comic characters' names. He attended the Wellington Polytechnic (now Massey University) journalism course in 1980 but did not graduate. ''The Flying Nun'' is an American sitcom about a community of nuns which included one who could fly when the wind caught her cornette. It was produced by Screen Gems for ABC based on the 1965 book ''The Fifteenth Pelican,'' written by Tere Rios. Sally Field starred as the title character, Sister Bertrille. The series originally ran on ABC from September 7, 1967, to April 3, 1970, producing 82 episodes, including a one-hour pilot episode. Siltbreeze
Siltbreeze is an American independent record label based in Philadelphia. It is known for its eclectic roster of artists and releases of experimental, noise, folk, and rock-based music. Founded in 1989 by Ohio native Tom Lax, the label evolved out of a zine of the same name which he published from 1987 until 1992. The first label release was a Halo of Flies EP, and soon after, Lax produced a steady stream of record releases by The Dead C, The Gibson Bros., Sebadoh, The Strapping Fieldhands, Harry Pussy, Jim Shepard, and Mike Rep among others throughout the early and mid 1990s. The label slowed its output toward the later 1990s until the mid and late 2000s. South Indies is a rights and publishing label established in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1984 as a vinyl records label and small book publisher. It released vinyl, books, cassettes and video-cassettes before moving into the leasing of material to distributing labels, and the protection of existing copyright. It subsumes various "one-off" projects and imprints such as Alpha Books (NZ), Tank Publishing, 5 to 12 publishing and some early Titus Books titles. The Clean
The Clean was a New Zealand indie rock band that formed in Dunedin in 1978. Hamish Kilgour
Hamish Kilgour (17 March 1957 – November or December 2022) was a New Zealand musician who co-founded the indie rock band The Clean with his brother David in 1978. Kilgour also co-founded the band Bailter Space in 1987 and later recorded as a solo artist. Career Kilgour was born in Christchurch on 17 March 1957. After the Clean broke up, Kilgour co-founded the Christchurch space rock band Bailter Space in 1987, and recorded the ''Nelsh Bailter Space'' EP and ''Tanker'' album with the band. In the late 1980s, while on a promotional tour with Bailter Space in New York City, Kilgour decided to remain in the city and leave left the band. David Watson (New Zealand Musician)
David Watson (born 1960) is an American musician originally from New Zealand. Watson has lived and worked in New York City since 1987. Originally known as a guitarist, since 1991 Watson's work has also featured new music for the Highland Bagpipes. Before moving to New York, while in New Zealand in the 1980s, Watson co-founded Braille Records to document the local experimental music scene. He organized national improvisation festivals (Off the Deep End, in 1984 and 1985) and in 2001 started the Artspace/alt.music festival to present new experimental music in Auckland. The Dead C are a New Zealand based music and art trio made up of members Bruce Russell, Michael Morley and Robbie Yeats. Russell plays electric guitar, Morley sings and plays electric guitar or laptop, and Yeats plays drums. They have been called one of the most interesting bands in the world by Thurston Moore, and have been cited as influences by Bardo Pond, Flying Saucer Attack, Labradford, and Pavement. Stuart Page (born 2 November 1957) is a New Zealand photographer, designer, filmmaker and drummer. Early life and education Page was born on 2 November 1957. He graduated from Ilam School of Fine Arts in Christchurch with a Diploma in Fine Arts (Hons) in Photography in 1980. Work Page has worked with artists on the Flying Nun label and many lesser known counterculture groups of his country. After travel to U.S.A. (May-Nov 1982) his screenprinting work took on a new vigour that brought him into contact with many lo-fi music groups. Apart from his photography and printing work, his main concern has been documentary film-making and his music group The Axemen.
