The Big Sombrero (film)
''The Big Sombrero'' is a 1949 American Western (genre), Western film directed by Frank McDonald (director), Frank McDonald and starring Gene Autry and Champion the Wonder Horse, Champion. Written by Olive Cooper, the film is about a singing cowboy hired as foreman of the Big Sombrero ranch by a man working against the interests of the ranch's absentee owner and workers. Plot Singing cowboy Gene Autry (Gene Autry) is out of work and looking for a job. After pawning his guitar, he meets former rodeo sharpshooter Angie Burke (Vera Marshe), who works for wealthy ranch owner Estrellita Estrada (Elena Verdugo). Angie suggests that Gene ride across the border to El Sombrero Grande, Estrellita's ranch. Gene learns that the ranch is managed by James Garland (Stephen Dunne (actor), Stephen Dunne), an acquaintance from their days with Monahan's Wild West Show. Gene heads south into Mexico. Frank McDonald (director)
Frank Burgess McDonald (November 9, 1899 – March 8, 1980) was an American film and television director, active from 1935 to 1966. He directed more than 100 films, including many Westerns starring Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, and numerous TV show episodes. He is interred at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park in Camarillo, California. McDonald was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Samuel and Florence McDonald. His father was an employee of Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Participation in amateur theatrical productions sparked an interest in performing, causing him to leave Baltimore City College to pursue a career in entertainment. McDonald's professional performing debut came in a vaudeville act in which he played a burglar. He also acted on Broadway, in ''Puppets'' (1925), ''The K Guy'' (1928), ''Just to Remind You'' (1931), and ''Bulls, Bears and Asses'' (1932). Johnny Lange
John George Lange (August 15, 1905 – January 6, 2006) was an American songwriter, working mostly in the motion picture industry. His chief musical collaborators were Archie Gottler and Jack Meskill. Biography Lange was born in Philadelphia and attended high school there. He began writing for film studios in 1937, and joined ASCAP in 1940. He resumed his film music career in 1946 and 1947, after World War II. He also wrote special material for night club singers, and the "Ice Capades of 1950". Lange's most popular composition was "Mule Train" which earned him an Academy Award nomination in 1950 (it was featured in the film ''Singing Guns''). The ASCAP online database shows him as the author of 211 songs. James Brockman
James Brockman (December 8, 1886 – May 22, 1967) was an American songwriter. Born in Russia, he emigrated to New York by himself at the age of 9 or 10. His given name was Jacob Brachman but he changed the spelling of the last name because it was mis-pronounced and the rest of the family followed with the change. Brockman began his career as a comedian in vaudeville and musicals in the early 1900s. He was a partner, along with James Kendis, of the Kendis-Brockman Music Company. He wrote the lyrics to ''Down among the Sheltering Palms'' with music by composer and Chicago music publisher Abe Olman. Oldman's marketing of the song led to Leo Feist acquiring it and encouraging Al Jolson to perform on stage. In 1919, he was a co-writer of the song "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles", which years later would become the anthem of the English football club West Ham United. "My Adobe Hacienda" is a song composed by Louise Massey and Lee Penny. It first became popular in 1941 with Massey's recorded version, where it placed at #23. The song was most popular in 1947 when Eddy Howard took the song to #2. That year the song was also recorded by Kenny Baker (#16), the Dinning Sisters (#9), and the Billy Williams Quartet (#13). Massey's original recording was re-released, and this time attained a chart position of #16. Between May and June 1947, the song appeared on Your Hit Parade for three weeks. Billboard listed it as 1947's 12th best seller in sheet music. Art Kassel released the song as a Vogue picture disc. Teddy Powell (March 1, 1905 – November 17, 1993) was born in Oakland, California, United States, as Teodoro Paolella, and became a respected American jazz musician, band leader, composer, and arranger. Some of his compositions were written under the pseudonym Freddy James. Powell began playing violin when he was eight and picked up the banjo when he was fourteen. During the late 1920s to the early 1930s, he was a member of the Abe Lyman orchestra, taking on the additional tasks of gathering radio bands. He formed the Teddy Powell Orchestra in 1939 and it performed through the 1940s.
