The Australian Club
The Australian Club in Melbourne, Australia is a gentleman's club founded in 1878 by English settlers to provide accommodation, food and refreshments, and congenial surroundings for Melbourne and Victorian businessmen. The Club is still active and its building at 110 William Street retains its original 19th-century architecture and furniture. Melbourne ( ; Boonwurrung/Woiwurrung: ''Narrm'' or ''Naarm'') is the capital and most populous city of the Australian state of Victoria, and the second-most populous city in both Australia and Oceania. Its name generally refers to a metropolitan area known as Greater Melbourne, comprising an urban agglomeration of 31 local municipalities, although the name is also used specifically for the local municipality of City of Melbourne based around its central business area. Alfred Roberts (surgeon)
Alfred Roberts (18 April 1892 – 10 February 1970) was an English grocer, preacher and local politician. He served Grantham as alderman from 1943 to 1952 and mayor from 1945 to 1946. His second daughter, Margaret, was the first female prime minister of the United Kingdom. Early life Roberts was born in Ringstead, Northamptonshire. He was the fifth of seven children. His father was Benjamin Ebenezer Roberts (28 December 1857 – 17 September 1925), from a Ringstead family, and his mother was Ellen Smith (20 November 1857 – 1 May 1935), whose own mother, Catherine Sullivan, was born at Kenmare in Ireland. Ellen's eldest two known siblings were also born in Ireland and her twin brothers in England in 1852. The gap in age between Alfred's aunt Mary and his uncles of around nine years coincides with the Great Famine. Charles William Wren
Charles William Wren (15 November 1856 – 19 April 1934) was an Australian banker. Wren was born in North Adelaide, South Australia and died in Italy. Wren became the accountant and branch inspector for the English, Scottish and Australian Bank for South Australia in 1881. He moved to Melbourne in 1888 as inspector's accountant. He was appointed resident inspector in New South Wales in 1901, and became the bank's Australasian general manager in July 1909. William Irving Winter-Irving
William Irving Winter-Irving, born William Irving Winter (1840 – 28 June 1901) was an Australian grazier, magistrate and politician, member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Winter-Irving was the third son of the late John Winter, of Lauder, Berwickshire, Scotland, who brought his family to Victoria in 1841, and ultimately settled in Lauderdale, Ballarat, by his marriage with Janet Margaret Irving, of Bonshaw, Scotland. He was educated at the Scotch College, Melbourne, and was brought up to pastoral pursuits, in which his father achieved very great success. In 1857 he, with his brothers, purchased Colbinabbin and other stations in the Rodney district at a cost of about £200,000; and in 1868, on a friendly dissolution of partnership, the Stanhope estate fell to his share. Colin Syme
Sir Colin York Syme (22 April 190319 January 1986) was an Australian lawyer, businessman, technological innovator, and medical research administrator. He was noted as Chairman of BHP for nineteen years (1952–71), and President of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research for seventeen years (1961–78). Colin Syme studied in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney before joining the Melbourne legal firm of Hedderwick, Fookes and Alston in 1923. An articled clerk, Syme had ambitions to become a barrister, but after the premature death of Bruce Hedderwick in 1925, he accepted an offer to stay at the firm and was made a partner in 1928, remaining so until 1966. Meanwhile, in 1937, he became a director of BHP and many of its subsidiaries, including Tubemakers of Australia, Australian Iron & Steel, Rylands Bros and the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation. Sydney Snow
Sir Sydney Snow (17 December 1887 – 24 November 1958) was an Australian businessman and political figure. His obituary in ''The Canberra Times'' described him as "one of Australia's greatest political, business and sporting figures". Early life Snow was born in Ballarat, Victoria, to Emily (née Piper) and John Snow. He was educated at Ballarat College. His father ran John Snow & Co., a drapery emporium, while his brother Sir Gordon Snow ran Snows Men's Wear. Business career In 1912, Snow moved to Sydney and established Sydney Snow Limited with the help of his father and a business partner William Vaughan Manton (who would go onto establish Manton & Sons in Melbourne).
