''The Associate'' (French:''L'associé'') is a 1979 comedy film directed by René Gainville and starring Michel Serrault, Claudine Auger and Catherine Alric.Goble p.376 A co-production between France, Hungary and West Germany it is an adaptation of the 1928 novel '' The Partner'' by Jenaro Prieto. The film served as the inspiration for a 1996 American remake '' The Associate''. The film's sets were designed by the art director Sydney Bettex. René Gainville
René Gainville (Budapest, 2 December 1931– Paris, 5 August 2014) was a Hungary, Hungarian-born French screenwriter and film director, film producer and actor. Daniel Prévost (born 20 October 1939) is a French actor, comedian and writer. Early life Daniel Prévost, alias Denis Forestier, was born to Micheline Chevalier and Mohand Ait Salem. His father was of Berber descent from Algeria (Kabylie region), a fact which he did not discover until later life. Mathieu Carrière (; born 2 August 1950) is a German actor. Life Carrière grew up in Berlin and Lübeck; he attended the Jesuit boarding school in Vannes, France, a school which had previously been attended by the director of Carrière's first major film, Volker Schlöndorff. In 1969, Carrière moved to Paris to study philosophy and continue his acting. Carrière is also a director and a writer and is known to fight for the rights of fathers.
