The Art Union
''The Art Journal'' was the most important British 19th-century magazine on art. It was founded in 1839 by Hodgson & Graves, print publishers, 6 Pall Mall, with the title ''Art Union Monthly Journal'' (or ''The Art Union''), the first issue of 750 copies appearing 15 February 1839. It was published in London but its readership was global in reach. History Hodgson & Graves hired Samuel Carter Hall as editor of ''Art Union Monthly Journal'', assisted by James Dafforne. Hall soon became the principal proprietor, but he was unable to turn a profit on his own. The London publisher George Virtue bought a share of the business in 1848, with Hall remaining as editor, and they renamed the periodical ''The Art Journal'' in 1849. In 1851, as part of the "Great Exhibition" of that year, ''The Art Journal'' featured Hall's engravings of 150 pictures from the private collections of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. In the history of the United Kingdom and the British Empire, the Victorian era was the period of Queen Victoria's reign, from 20 June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901. The era followed the Georgian period and preceded the Edwardian period, and its later half overlaps with the first part of the '' Belle Époque'' era of Continental Europe. There was a strong religious drive for higher moral standards led by the nonconformist churches, such as the Methodists and the evangelical wing of the established Church of England. Richard Austin Artlett (9 November 1807 – 1 September 1873) was a British engraver and painter. He was a pupil of Robert Cooper, and then of James Thomson. Works Artlett engraved in the dotted manner. He carried out some figure-subjects, including ''Boulogne in 1805'' and ''Boulogne in 1855'', after John Absolon. Llewellynn Frederick William Jewitt (or Llewellyn) (24 November 1816 – 5 June 1886) was a British illustrator, engraver, natural scientist and author of ''The Ceramic Art of Great Britain'' (1878). His output was prodigious and covered a large range of interests. Biography Jewitt was born at Kimberworth, Rotherham, the seventeenth and final child of artist, author and schoolmaster Arthur Jewitt and his wife Martha. His education, largely from his father, who was master at Kimberworth Endowed School, started in Duffield, Derbyshire where his family moved in 1818. Edward Lewes Cutts
Edward Lewes Cutts was an English writer, antiquarian and curate, specialising in archaeology and the study of ecclesiastical history. Life and church career Cutts was born on 2 March 1824 in Sheffield. He was the son of John Priston Cutts, an optician, and Mary, daughter of Robert Waterhouse. He was educated at Sheffield Collegiate School and graduated B.A. at Queens' College, Cambridge, in 1848. Being ordained in the same year, he was curate successively of Ide Hill, Kent, until 1850, of Coggeshall, Essex, until 1857, and of Kelvedon until 1859, and was perpetual curate of Billericay until 1865. Frederick William Fairholt
Frederick William Fairholt (1814 – 3 April 1866) was an English antiquarian, antiquary and wood-engraver. Early life Fairholt was born in London. His father, who was of a German family (the name was originally Fahrholz), was a tobacco manufacturer, and Frederick was at first employed in the business. He then worked as a drawing-master and later as a scene-painter. Pen and ink copies made by him of figures from William Hogarth's plates led to his being employed by Charles Knight (engraver), Charles Knight on several of his illustrated publications. Career Fairholt's first published literary work was a contribution to ''Hone's Year-Book'' in 1831. His life was one of almost uninterrupted quiet labour, carried on until within a few days of death. Thomas Wright (antiquarian)
Thomas Wright (23 April 181023 December 1877) was an English antiquarian and writer. Life Wright was born near Ludlow at Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire descended from a Quaker family formerly living at Bradford. He was educated at Ludlow Grammar School and at Trinity College, Cambridge, whence he graduated in 1834. While at Cambridge he contributed to the ''Gentleman's Magazine'' and other periodicals, and in 1835 he came to London to devote himself to a literary career. His first separate work was ''Early English Poetry in Black Letter, with Prefaces and Notes'' (1836, 4 vols. 12mo), which was followed during the next forty years by an extensive series of publications, many of lasting value. Ralph Nicholson Wornum
Ralph Nicholson Wornum (1812–1877) was a British artist, art historian and administrator. He was Keeper and Secretary of the National Gallery of London from 1855 until his death. Early life He was the son of Robert Wornum the pianoforte maker, and was born at Thornton, near Norham, Northumberland, on 29 December 1812. Having studied at University College London in 1832, he gave up plans to read for the bar, and attended the studio of Henry Sass. In 1834 he went abroad, spending six years in visiting galleries, in Munich, Dresden, Rome, Florence, and Paris.
