The Armoury
The Armoury also called The Armouries is a Canadian Forces armoury located at 530 Queens Avenue (at the corner of 6th Street) in New Westminster, British Columbia and it is the oldest active wooden military structure in Canada. It is the home of The Royal Westminster Regiment, an infantry reserve regiment. Architecture The wooden structure was one of the few buildings to survive the great fire of 1898. Although it was a single structure it is referred to as "The Armouries" by members of The Royal Westminster Regiment. In 1895 contractor David Bain, using designs of Thomas Fuller (architect), Thomas Fuller, began construction on the site. The building was completed in 1896 but would still require the completion of the Gun Room in 1898. In addition to the parade square the building houses the Regimental Museum, offices, quartermaster store room, Officers' Mess and Warrants' and Sergeants' Mess (the Junior Ranks' Mess is housed in the adjoining building). An arsenal is a place where arms and ammunition are made, maintained and repaired, stored, or issued, in any combination, whether privately or publicly owned. Arsenal and armoury (British English) or armory (American English) are mostly regarded as synonyms, although subtle differences in usage exist. A sub-armory is a place of temporary storage or carrying of weapons and ammunition, such as any temporary post or patrol vehicle that is only operational in certain times of the day. Etymology The term in English entered the language in the 16th century as a loanword from french: arsenal, itself deriving from the it, arsenale, which in turn is thought to be a corruption of ar, دار الصناعة, , meaning "manufacturing shop".
