''The American Melody Hour'' was an American old-time radio program. ''The American Melody Hour'' was designed as a musical variety show. The program showcased a half-hour playing and singing "the tunes of yesterday and tomorrow..." mostly sung by baritone Bob Hannon. The program was hosted by lyric soprano Vivian Della Chiesa. Other regular performers on the program included conductor Frank Black, vocalist Frank Munn and baritone Conrad Thibault. The program was produced by daytime radio monarch Frank Hummert. ''The American Melody Hour'' originally could be heard on the Blue Network on Wednesday nights from October 22, 1941–April 15, 1942. The program than moved to CBS Tuesdays at 7:30 pm on April 21, 1942. In 1947, the program moved to Wednesdays at 8 where it ended its run on July 7, 1948. Old-time Radio
The Golden Age of Radio, also known as the old-time radio (OTR) era, was an era of radio in the United States where it was the dominant electronic home entertainment medium. It began with the birth of commercial radio broadcasting in the early 1920s and lasted through the 1950s, when television gradually superseded radio as the medium of choice for scripted programming, variety and dramatic shows. Radio was the first broadcast medium, and during this period people regularly tuned in to their favorite radio programs, and families gathered to listen to the home radio in the evening. According to a 1947 C. E. Hooper survey, 82 out of 100 Americans were found to be radio listeners. A lyric soprano is a type of operatic soprano voice that has a warm quality with a bright, full timbre that can be heard over an orchestra. Vivian Della Chiesa
Vivian Della Chiesa (October 9, 1915 – January 6, 2009) was an American lyric soprano who achieved a high level of popularity in the United States singing on the radio during the 1940s and the early 1950s. Della Chiesa performed a wide variety of classical and popular works from opera to musical theatre, jazz, and popular songs. She sang on a number of radio programs during her career, including ''The American Album of Familiar Music'', ''The American Melody Hour'', and ''The Standard Hour'' among others. A particularly important triumph for her radio career was a 1943 radio concert of Brahms’s '' Deutsches Requiem'' with conductor Arturo Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her radio career, Della Chiesa performed actively on the opera stage, mostly at the Chicago City Opera Company and the Chicago Opera Company, during the 1930s and 1940s. Conrad Thibault
Conrad Thibault (November 13, 1903 – August 1, 1987) was an American baritone vocalist who frequently appeared on radio, recordings, and concert tours. Early years Thibault was born and raised in Northampton, Massachusetts, where he was involved with the church choir. Local resident Calvin Coolidge took notice of him and encouraged him to apply for a scholarship at the Curtis Institute of Music, from which he later graduated. He also graduated from the Juilliard School and was a student of Emilio de Gogorza, who became his mentor. Career Thibault's professional career began in the late 1920s with the Philadelphia Grand Opera Company. His operatic debut came in 1928 in Puccini's ''Manon''. Frank Hummert
Edward Frank Hummert, Jr. (June 2, 1884 – March 12, 1966), professionally known as Frank Hummert and sometimes credited as E. Frank Hummert, was an American advertising agent originally but was best known for writing/producing episodes of nearly 100 daytime/primetime radio dramas and soap opera serials between the 1930s and the 1950s. Hummert, along with his wife Anne Hummert, became the monarchs of daytime radio with dramas such as ''Just Plain Bill'' (1932–55), ''The Romance of Helen Trent'' (1933–60), ''Ma Perkins'' (1933–60), and ''Backstage Wife'' (1935–59). The Blue Network (previously known as the NBC Blue Network) was the on-air name of a now defunct American Commercial broadcasting, radio network, which broadcast from 1927 through 1945.
