The American Album Of Familiar Music
''The American Album of Familiar Music'' is a radio program of popular music broadcast from October 11, 1931, to June 20, 1954, first on NBC, then on ABC and then on local stations. Directed by James Haupt, the show was produced by Frank and Anne Hummert, better remembered today for creating ''Ma Perkins'' and numerous other soap operas. Sponsored by Bayer Aspirin, the show highlighted performances by a variety of vocalists, instrumentalists, and vocal groups. When it began on October 11, 1931 on NBC, the lead vocalists were Frank Munn and Virginia Rea, two of early radio's top stars because of their previous appearances as "Paul Oliver" and "Olive Palmer" on ''The Palmolive Hour'' (1927–31). Ring Lardner observed, "under any name, they sound as sweet." Lardner outlined his "perfect radio program" for ''The New Yorker'' magazine, and found a place for The Revelers along with Paul Whiteman and Fanny Brice. Vivian Della Chiesa
Vivian Della Chiesa (October 9, 1915 – January 6, 2009) was an American lyric soprano who achieved a high level of popularity in the United States singing on the radio during the 1940s and the early 1950s. Della Chiesa performed a wide variety of classical and popular works from opera to musical theatre, jazz, and popular songs. She sang on a number of radio programs during her career, including ''The American Album of Familiar Music'', ''The American Melody Hour'', and ''The Standard Hour'' among others. A particularly important triumph for her radio career was a 1943 radio concert of Brahms’s '' Deutsches Requiem'' with conductor Arturo Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Walter Gustave Haenschen ( - March 27, 1980) was an arranger and composer of music and an orchestra conductor, primarily on old-time radio programs. Early years Haenschen was born in St. Louis to parents who had come from Germany and settled in that city. His father was Walter Haenschen, an invalid, and his mother was Frieda Haenschen. All of his family played music or sang, including an aunt who was a concert pianist. His uncle taught music in Europe and in Chicago. Haenschen attended McKinley High School. While he was in elementary school, he carried newspapers to earn money, and as a high-school student he and some friends formed the Eclipse Novelty Company to make pennants to sell at football games. As a teenager, he played piano to accompany silent films in St. Louis theaters. Howard Moorhead Claney (April 17, 1898 - April 30, 1980) was an American actor, an announcer on old-time radio, and a narrator of films. Early years The son of William J. Claney and Mary J. André Baruch
André Baruch (August 20, 1908 – September 15, 1991) was a French-American film narrator, radio announcer, news commentator, Talk radio, talk show host, disc jockey and sportscaster. He hosted radio programs from the 1940s to the 1980s with Bea Wain, his wife. Early life Baruch was born on August 20, 1908 in Paris, France. When he was 12 years old, he came to Brooklyn, where he attended a public elementary school and had a newspaper route. his later jobs included working for a furniture company and several grocery-store chains. Alfred Bryan (lyricist)
Alfred Bryan (September 15, 1871 – April 1, 1958) was a Canadian lyricist. Bryan was born in Brantford, Ontario. He worked as an arranger in New York and wrote lyrics for many Broadway shows in the late 1910s and early 1920s. In the 1920s he moved to Hollywood to write lyrics for screen musicals. Bryan worked with several composers during his career. Among his collaborators were Henriette Blanke-Belcher, Fred Fischer, Al Sherman, Larry Stock and Joe McCarthy. Perhaps his most successful song was "I Didn't Raise My Boy to Be a Soldier" (1915), with music by Al Piantadosi. The song sold 650,000 copies during the first three months and became one of 1915's top-selling songs in the United States. Although Bryan himself was not a committed pacifist, he described the American public's anti-war sentiments in his lyrics. He died in Gladstone, New Jersey, aged 86.
