''The Adventures of Doctor Eszterhazy'' is a collection of historical mystery fantasy short stories by Avram Davidson featuring his scholarly detective character Doctor Eszterhazy and set in an imaginary European country. It was first published in hardcover by Owlswick Press in January 1991, with an ebook edition issued by Gateway/Orion in August 2013. The book is an expansion of the earlier collection ''The Enquiries of Doctor Eszterhazy'' (1975), adding five more Eszterhazy stories written later but set earlier. ''Whispers'' was one of the new horror and fantasy fiction magazines of the 1970s. History Named after a fictitious magazine referenced in the H. P. Lovecraft story " The Unnamable", ''Whispers'' began as an attempt by editor and publisher Stuart David Schiff to produce a modest semi-professional little magazine that hoped to revive the legendary ''Weird Tales'' in a small way. The magazine was also a followup to August Derleth's The Arkham Collector, which had ceased after Derleth's death. ''Whispers'' was first published in July 1973. It went on to become a more elaborate showcase for dark fantasy fiction and artwork of the 1970s. ''Fantastic'' was an American digest-size fantasy and science fiction magazine, published from 1952 to 1980. It was founded by the publishing company Ziff Davis as a fantasy companion to ''Amazing Stories''. Early sales were good, and the company quickly decided to switch ''Amazing'' from pulp format to digest, and to cease publication of their other science fiction pulp, ''Fantastic Adventures''. Within a few years sales fell, and Howard Browne, the editor, was forced to switch the focus to science fiction rather than fantasy. Browne lost interest in the magazine as a result and the magazine generally ran poor-quality fiction in the mid-1950s, under Browne and his successor, Paul W. Fairman. Gene Wolfe
Gene Rodman Wolfe (May 7, 1931 – April 14, 2019) was an American science fiction and fantasy writer. He was noted for his dense, allusive prose as well as the strong influence of his Catholic faith. He was a prolific short story writer and novelist, and won many literary awards. Wolfe has been called "the Melville of science fiction", and was honored as a Grand Master by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Wolfe is best known for his ''Book of the New Sun'' series (four volumes, 1980–1983), the first part of his "Solar Cycle". In 1998, ''Locus'' magazine ranked it the third-best fantasy novel published before 1990 based on a poll of subscribers that considered it and several other series as single entries. Historical Mystery
The historical mystery or historical whodunit is a subgenre of two literary genres, historical fiction and mystery fiction. These works are set in a time period considered historical from the author's perspective, and the central plot involves the solving of a mystery or crime (usually murder). Though works combining these genres have existed since at least the early 20th century, many credit Ellis Peters's '' Cadfael Chronicles'' (1977–1994) for popularizing what would become known as the historical mystery.
