The ALTdot COMedy Lounge
The ALTdot Comedy Lounge is a cabaret-style alternative comedy show in Toronto, Canada. For over 21 years, the ALTdot Comedy Lounge has hosted alternative, non-traditional and new material, with drop-in guests from around the world. It runs every Monday at The Rivoli. The show was a product of the alternative comedy movement of the late 1990s, such as Largo and Uncabaret in Los Angeles and Luna Lounge in New York. The Kids in the Hall had a Rivoli residency show on Mondays in the 1990s. In 2005 a Tuesday show, The Sketch Comedy Lounge, was added and ran until 2011. The first Tuesday of every month there is an ALTdot Open Mic where the producer can see some emerging comedians showcase and one comic gets a spot on a future ALTdot. Alternative Comedy
Alternative comedy is a term coined in the 1980s for a style of comedy that makes a conscious break with the mainstream comedic style of an era. The phrase has had different connotations in different contexts: in the UK, it was used to describe content that was an "alternative" to the mainstream of live comedy, which often involved racist and sexist material. In other contexts, it is the nature of the form that is "alternative", avoiding reliance on a standardised structure of a sequence of jokes with punch lines. Patton Oswalt has defined it as "comedy where the audience has no pre-set expectations about the crowd, and vice versa. In comedy clubs, there tends to be a certain vibe—alternative comedy explores different types of material." In an interview with ''The A.V. Martha Chaves
Martha Chaves is a Nicaraguans, Nicaraguan-Canadians, Canadian comedian, actress, activist and playwright. She performs Stand-up comedy, standup in English, Spanish, French and Italian. She is a regular in the comedy circuits in Canada, the United States and Latin America, at Just for Laughs and other major festivals, and on CBC Radio. Since coming out around 2009, Chaves has spoken out for the LGBT community and has become known for her comedic take on being a homosexual person of colour in Canada. Derek Edwards (born 1958) is a Canadian stand-up comedian and actor from Timmins, Ontario. He went to Timmins High and Vocational School.
