The 1st International Chopin Competition On Period Instruments
The 1st International Chopin Competition on Period Instruments - the inaugural edition of the International Chopin Competition in the piano class, which was held on September 2–14, 2018 in Warsaw on period instruments, organised by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute. 30 pianists from 9 countries were invited to participate in the competition. The auditions were divided into two stages, which took place on September 4–6 and September 8–10, and the final concerts lasted from September 12–13. The competition was won by Tomasz Ritter from Poland. The competition ended on September 14 the winners' concert. Period piano instruments The idea of the competition is to perform Chopin’s music on instruments it was composed for. Pianists could choose the piano they played during the competition from among five instruments selected by the jury. Fryderyk Chopin Institute
The Fryderyk Chopin Institute ( pl, Narodowy Instytut Fryderyka Chopina) is a Polish organization dedicated to researching and promoting the life and works of Polish composer Frédéric Chopin. It was created in 2001 as the result of legislation in the Polish Parliament and is under direct control of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Its headquarters are located in Warsaw. International Chopin Piano Competition
The International Chopin Piano Competition ( pl, Międzynarodowy Konkurs Pianistyczny im. Fryderyka Chopina), often referred to as the Chopin Competition, is a piano competition held in Warsaw, Poland. It was initiated in 1927 and has been held every five years since 1955. It is one of the few competitions devoted entirely to the works of a single composer, in this case, Frédéric Chopin. The competition is currently organized by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute. The Chopin Competition is one of the most prestigious competitions in classical music, often launching the careers of its winners overnight through major concert dates and lucrative recording contracts. Sébastien Érard
Sébastien Érard (born Sebastian Erhard, 5 April 1752 – 5 August 1831) was a French instrument maker of German origin who specialised in the production of pianos and harps, developing the capacities of both instruments and pioneering the modern piano. Biography Érard was born in Strasbourg. While a boy he showed great aptitude for practical geometry and architectural drawing, and in the workshop of his father, who was an upholsterer, he found opportunity for the early exercise of his mechanical ingenuity. Ignace Joseph Pleyel (; ; 18 June 1757 – 14 November 1831) was an Austrian-born French composer, music publisher and piano builder of the Classical period. Life Early years He was born in in Lower Austria, the son of a schoolmaster named Martin Pleyl. Despite the fact that some sources claim that he had 37 siblings, he was the 8th and last child of his fathers first wedding to Anna Theresia née Forster and had eight more half siblings from his father's second wedding to Maria Anna née Placho. While still young, he probably studied with Johann Baptist Wanhal, and from 1772 he became the pupil of Joseph Haydn in Eisenstadt. Fryderyk Buchholtz
Fryderyk Buchholtz – piano maker, organ maker, guild master, guild elder (1825-1826), born on May 16, 1792 Olsztynek (Hohenstein, Prussia), died on May 15, 1837 in Warsaw. Life The son of Andrzej and Ewa Pohl, who settled in Warsaw; Fryderyk Buchholtz was an apprentice carpenter when he set out on a journey from Warsaw. In 1815, after he finished studying piano making in Vienna, he returned to his home city and founded a piano factory at 1352 Mazowiecka street, and by 1825, he was able to buy the property he had been renting for the factory. Conrad Graf
Conrad Graf (17 November 1782 in Riedlingen, Further Austria – 18 March 1851 in Vienna) was an Austrian-German piano maker. His pianos were used by Beethoven, Chopin, and Robert and Clara Schumann, among others. Life and career Graf began his career as a cabinet maker, studying the craft in his native Riedlingen in south Germany, in what was then Further Austria. He reached the status of journeyman in 1796 and migrated to Vienna in either 1798 or 1799. In 1800 he served briefly in an all-volunteer military unit, the Jäger Freikorps, then became apprenticed to a piano maker named Jakob Schelkle, who worked in Währing, then a suburb of Vienna. John Broadwood & Sons is an English piano manufacturer, founded in 1728 by Burkat Shudi and continued after his death in 1773 by John Broadwood. Early history John Broadwood (1732–1812), a Scottish joiner and cabinetmaker, came to London in 1761 and began to work for the Swiss harpsichord manufacturer Burkat Shudi. He married Shudi's daughter eight years later and became a partner in the firm in 1770. The piano is a stringed keyboard instrument in which the strings are struck by wooden hammers that are coated with a softer material (modern hammers are covered with dense wool felt; some early pianos used leather).
