Thanawiyat Al-Basra
Thanawiyat Al-Basra ( ar, فريق ثانوية البصرة, lit=Basra Secondary School), was an Iraqi football team based in Al-Ashar, Basra. The club was founded in the 1920s, and in 1931, the team played against the Bahrain national team in Basra and was able to defeat them with a score of 2–1. It was the first local Iraqi team to win over a national team. In 1942 a very strong team was formed by high school principal Yousef Saleh and sports teacher Hamoudi Al-Bader. The team played in the official tournaments that were held during that period, and was able to qualifying for the final and finishing as runners-up in the Iraq FA Basra Premier League in 1950–51 season. Iraq FA Basra Premier League
The Iraq FA Basra Premier League ( ar, دوري الاتحاد العراقي لمنطقة البصرة) was the top-level division of football in Basra between 1948 and 1973. It was controlled by the Basra branch of the Iraq Football Association and was one of several regional league championships played in Iraq at the time, with others including the Baghdad, Kirkuk and Mosul leagues. The first champions of the competition were Al-Minaa, who won the title in the 1948–49 season. The regional leagues folded in 1973 and were replaced by the Iraqi National First Division. Al-Minaa were the competition's most successful team with 15 titles. Hamza Qasim
Hamza Qasim ( ar, حمزة قاسم ; born 1933) is a retired Iraqi football goalkeeper, who played with the Iraq national team in the 1957 Pan Arab Games. He also played for Al-Minaa. Coaching career Qasim served as coach for Al-Minaa from 1971 to 1974. Multi-talent and activities Qasim was born in Basra, and was a multi-sport athlete. In addition to being an international footballer, he was a basketball player for the Iraq national basketball team. He was also a competitor in athletics (high jump and 110 metres hurdles). Qasim founded the first Iraqi Badminton Federation, and founded the first team for badminton in Iraq, establishing men's and women's teams in 1970s. Personal life Qasim is married to Iraqi actress Salima Khudhair and lives with her in Baghdad. and they had one son, actor Wissam Hamza, who died in an accident in Syria in 2011. Peter Saeed Easho Murad () (born 1928) is a former international Iraqi football player, who was one of the first players to play in first Iraq national football team, he also played for Al-Minaa, and with the reserve team of English club Manchester United during the 1960s. Early years Saeed Easho was the son of an Eastern Orthodox priest, who had settled in the city of Basra in the early 20th century from the heart of the old Ottoman Empire. Saeed excelled at football at his primary school in the district of Al-Ashar and at Thanawiya Al-Basra and was chosen to play for the Basra Select side while in school, taking on British Army sides based in the city during WWII.
